I appreciate the older generation smiling on us youngins. It has come from the teachings of older generations (my parents) to make budgets and wise purchasing/financial decisions. Because of their advice I am already maxing out my 401k at work, have an automatic withdrawal into a personal retirement savings every paycheck that I pretend to not even see, and have mentally coached me how to see how much I make, but how much I can spend as I always need to take into account my student loans for my B.S. my soon to be car payments, and to be able to save to put down on a home in the short future.

I am not claiming that I am an expert by any means, but through my degree in Business and Comp. Sci I have learned the book smarts of financial responsibility, but it is because of the experience and lessons learned from my parents and others who have "been there done that" that I have the ability to take that knowledge and apply it to the real world.

Being 24 and needing a new car, I have the choice of fixing up my current one which would be easily double/triple the value of the car, buying just any other car that I don't want or won't enjoy, or buy the car that I have been following since it's reintroduction and long before. It is an easy choice, and while I still live at home, seeing as I just graduated. I would rather pay down my student and car loans while having my parents be kind enough to offer me a place to live free of charge, rather than rent an apartment and thus not be able to afford something that I will treasure for my first "after college car".

As for the above statement about why by the car but have it in your parents driveway, well that also come with the economy and the job hunt. It is easier to take the job I did and live at home right out of school and then hunt around to find what I really want to do and relocate rather than find a job and relocate without knowing anything about what I am about to get myself into. I have a spreadsheet breakdown of pretty much every facet of which I spend money on, right to the dollar, and how it will effect my paycheck. Even with the car (1.5x payments), the student loans (2x payments), and every day expensive, I am still managing to save a sizable amount yearly that will allow me to put a down payment on a nice house within two years.

I guess what I am trying to say is that it all comes down to knowing your limit, creating a budget for yourself, and most importantly, taking the advice from your elders who have experienced it and know a thing or two about how do deal with money and the proper ways of handling it. Thank you Calflan for your faith in my generation, and while your generation and mine has their screw ups who are in debt up to their eye balls in their meaningless attempt at show-off-dom/keeping-up-with-the-Jones', there are those of us who have the education, experience, and mentors to do what is right. Thank you sir, you certainly given respect to those of us you do not know but still trust us, you have earned my respect and I am glad to share this webspace with you and the heritage of owning a new Camaro with you.

Seriously - your parents must be proud of you - your reply gives us elders hope for the future led by "youngins" like you. Namaste.

Ditto on the turning 30 in March.

I hope they are more responsible than I was... before I knew it I was 17k in debt by the time I was 21..

I managed to pay that completely off though (stupid credit cards) and now I have no debt except for my current car.

However, I wish I would have gone to school earlier... it's quite a shame. Me and my bud started out making the same money.. now he's the head honcho of a consulting company with a 400k house. me... i'm merely look'n up in the sky at his success. Ah well!

look i'm working for my future and the present, yes i know its great to save but if i save everything, when am going to enjoy it???? when i'm 40??? i want to enjoy some of my money while i'm still young. when your young u dont have to worry about paying for kids. i see nothing wrong with enjoying money at a younger age as long as you do it in moderation, just my .02

Well I dont have any plans on getting one at this point but im def watching to see what turns out with the whole z28 speculation. I'm 24 with a BA in business management, looking to go back next year to start my MBA. Right now I am a VP of a staffing agency that ive worked at since 16, and plan on heading up my own company here in the near future, since people are selling their companies fairly cheap now days Ive had my eye on a few opportunities. I ended up buying my first house last May, so the mortgage comes first which is puting any new big purchases on hold till I can bring in some more income. I dont plan on doing the buy now pay later thing since you can see that its come back around lately to bite people in the ass.

I am 22. I really want a 1SS but I think I am going to just get a LS1 TA and keep my Grand Prix as a DD. I graduate May of 2009 and plan to upgrade to the TA next spring. My current Camaro is paid off and has served(and still is) me wonderful. Im not sure that I would ever get rid of it. Its got rust, a v6 and 200k+ but its my first muscle car and it would be stupid to sell it so I can afford a new one. I would love a 1SS but in Michigan, its hard to have a $20,000 car that you drive half the year.

If we end up leaving Michigan and head to Tennessee....girlfriend gets the Grand Prix and Im getting a 2SS/RS in Summit White. I feel I could DD it down there and not feel bad.

I'm so great at saving money bla bla bla retirement bla bla invest early

haha jk

I'm 25, you only live once. Sure us younger folks could have gone with a honda fit and put the rest of these car payments towards something else... but where's the fun in that?

23 still live at home because its way to expensive to rent, and i plan on leaving the house once and never returning, i pay out of pocket for school, i work for a bank security and equipment service company and i wanted a camaro since i was a little kid, and it was either this car or a new motorcycle, well my mom freaked out and begged me to get the car, plus a girl that i plan on eventually asking to marry said that she cant date someone who rides a cycle, and i told her i wont date a smoker, so no bike, quit smoking, shes still in Croatia right now, and she doesnt know that i ordered it

People ask how the hell I can afford my car. How the hell I put down almost half... it's called priorities! I'm single, no house, no kids, make decent money and I'm cheap. Took me about a year of working to save up enough. I was thinking... hmmm should I save up a lil more and buy a house or should I say screw it all and buy something fun. I decided I'm not mature enough for a house and don't want the responsibility. So, Camaro it was! Well you also can't discount the fact that I became obsessed and it would have been a grave danger to my health had I not been able to get the Camaro. And I don't regret it a bit. Maybe I will when I'm older but you only live once! And yes, I'm still putting 11% (totaling 15% if you count the company match) into my 401k. I'm just glad I was able to get financing. Have perfect credit but still got turned down by several institutions due to lack of credit history (even though I was cosigned on my previous vehicle for 3yrs and had CCs with 0 missed payments for several years as well).
