unless the new mustang drops 500 lbs.. a 400hp 5.0L is going to get a mid 13 quarter mile. Camaro did that with 300hp

well there is the problem... the Mustang GT for 2008 weighs 3800 lbs... that is why your 02 camaro ran a better time than the Gt500... that thing has to weigh over 2 tons... if our camaro comes in under the Mustang (which might be hard) we'll have an edge...

High twelves. Most definitely High twelves. People have been able to get stock G8s into the mid/low 13's. Less weight, more power = high twelves.

Looks like ford's test mules beat out the chevy test mules in the category of "most exposed dual mufflers".

I haven't read too many reviews about the GT500, but even as much as that car weighs, to only run a low 13 is flat out poor; that driver couldn't drive for crap. Most of these crappy rags' couldn't drive to save their lives; the only magazine I'd trust to run real world numbers would be like GMHTP or Mustangs and Fast Fords. I know that GMHTP runs on a preppd' track, powershifts, and just runs balls out. Those other rags' (save probably Chevy High Performance and Super Chevy) don't powershift, run on a crappy, unprepared surface for drag tests, and drive like "old ladies." A comparison between a nearly stock LS1 F-body to a stock GT500 is crazy; that 500 would run circles around a F-body given a good driver.
Regardless, I'm sure that GM has a fair idea what's going on with the competition and will deliver us a car that is at least the equal of anything on the market upon release.

anyway you look at it.. its pretty impressive to know that our base camaro should be running neck and neck with the top dog mustang. personally im not too worried about their naturally asperated model. those models have never been a threat
EDIT: base v8 that is |

I don't believe that a base Camaro is going to keep up with a 500. Those cars make like and average of 450 RWHP and although they weigh near 4000+ lbs. I can't see the math in a car with 150 horse' less, a couple hundred pounds less, go faster; how's than math work out?... Don't get me wrong; I'd love to see that happen, but I just don't see that happening. It doesn't really matter until we start getting numbers anyway.
JMHO.

heres my logic. from the best data ive read, a stock GT500 run in the 1/4 is 12.8sec.. 500hp or not, those are the numbers. The G8 GXP, (which is heavier than a camaro) is supposed to run similar numbers at 402hp. So there is no reason a lighter 400+hp camaro should not do the same.. right??

The problem is that the faster you go the more the Earth and other physical forces try to resist further acceleration so in order to go faster and faster the necessary HP (or consequently necessary weight-loss) is an exponential curve rather than a linear relationship. Thus it's hard to draw exact comparisons.
