Honestly, I think we'll start seeing more Text-to-speech systems being implemented.

But, even driving while using a handsfree phone can be a large distraction. The driver on the other end of the phone can't actually see what's going on inside the car, so if a deer runs out in front of you, they're probably still gabbing about who knows what, whereas another person in the vehicle would see the animal and respond differently.

I also hate people who talk/text while driving, its very rude and annoying, we didnt have cell phones 20 years ago, and the world still survived then, so you cant tell me its so important that it cant wait!

I gave my kids an easy choice, if I see them on the phone while driving, they will get a bus pass. Can't hurt anyone while texting on the bus.

hahaha suzuki swift, the car named for irony.

anyway, that game is not accurate at all, i text and drive on my daily commute, i live about 10 miles out of the urban area, and i take a very very untraveled road, i pass maybe a car every other day. i do not text in traffic when i would be endangering other drivers.

As far as I am concerned, its about time. Multi-tasking is just another way of saying you are distracted while driving. Think about how far you travel during any given time period.

If you lose your focus on driving, while texting etc., you have missed your chance to avoid an accident.

And, yeah, I am older. And yeah, I have had accidents in the past. But none for the last 30 years now. Both of my accidents were weather related. and one of those was from someone hitting me. Much like seatbelt laws, it is as a result of our National indifference to safety while driving. We expect some one else to protect us, add costly and heavy safety gear to our vehicles to protect us from ourselves.

The reality is that this behavior needs to be wrestled down and elminated. That's my feeling and everyone has their right to disagree. However, when someone else's distracted driving takes its toll on my safety and life, I draw the line.
inattentive driving should be right up there with reckless driving. Thanks to the insuance companies we have "accident forgiveness" which translates into higher rate for EVERYONE instead of just the guilty who pay more attention to being "in touch" rather than driving.

This is pretty much the attitude my friend had also. We live in a rural area also. He found out that Oak trees don't move when you hit them. It was one messed up Z when he took his eyes off the road for a few seconds. Good luck !

Well if everyone while texting or talking on the phone ONLY hit trees or utility poles etc. that would be GREAT....

But they ferquently kill OTHER people that is the problem.

No, it's been proven that talking, even with a bluetooth speakerphone, causes the majority of human minds to not be able to focus completely on driving, which is obviously the most important

i agree with this, i can justify texting and driving to myself when im not endangering other people. I trust my self that much, but not enough to put other peoples lives on the line

oh and by texting and driving, i dont mean i constanly do it, but i reply to text

I don't agree with this, even the people that just run off the road and wind up in the trees cost you and me money in both, taxes to pay the paramedic to drag his sorry butt out of the wreck, and drives my insurance premiums up. I like to think of all the great toys I could buy if both my taxes and insurance would go down.
