Today it was about 23 degrees with some ice on the ground in places like bridges and my tires did absolutely no good. Even in places with no ice it was difficult to get moving from, a stop and felt wrong when stopping.

Question for those of you that have switched your tires out. How do you store them and prevent dry-rot?

This is my experience in sub 30's here in Seattle as well. With ANY amount of ice on the road, you will be doing spinning starts with no pressure on the gas at all, even if they've been run all night long.

Mine's in the garage in the slick, and has only come out when its dry out, which has been 3 or 4 days over the past 2 months. :(

These tires can be driven safely in cold weather. It's cold in Atlanta right now. However, I have driven more sports cars than I can count and a lot of different tires. These tires need to be babied in the winter. I can spin them up in 5th gear at 2000 rpm on dry cold pavement just by accelerating. ( of course there is that pesky SC) So drive very carefully...

I've done this for 10 years on my SUV and I simply clean them in the fall, add a tire protectant and store them standing up, side by side in the garage. I'm sure you can cover them with a tarp, sing to them each morning and rub french fry grease on them each week too, but they're just tires and mine are still looking good after 6 years of doing this...

Summer tires regardless if they are pirellis or another brand are not properly siped for wet weather traction and the rubber compound is designed for high heat do to hard driving and cornering in the summer. Which means they develop this tire as a use specific tire for summer driving. So when you put the tire at the other end of the spectrum extreme cold it is very hard and acts like a sled for traction and has to really warm up to perform at all again because it designed that way. Unfortunatly when tire manufactures build tires there are tradeoffs to the specific needs you want. Maximum dry traction means a racing slick which has minimum tread sipes maximum rubber to road contact. Winter driving in snow needs less rubber contact more sipes to channell water and a much softer rubber to be flexible to help push the water and snow away from tire. The softer rubber functions better in the cold. The harder larger tread blocks of a summer tire have no flexibilty whatsover and gets worse the colder it gets. would you wear your dress shoes to go out in the snow or do you put on your boots. When you go play basketball do you wear your dress shoes, boots or gym shoes. Non of them are bad they just have a purpose and same as tires one shoe does not do everything there is always tradeoffs.

People can sit behind their computer screen and preach to the choir about how tires operate, and how they don't. I've had 3 months of day to day experience in sub 30 degree weather. I know if my tires slip or not, and they don't.

Feel free to banter on about how much Summer Tires fail in winter conditions, and maybe I have the only set of All Seasons from Oshawa, but they operate fine.

Verio I am glad you have had 3 months of luck and hopefully that will continue for you and you do not end up in a ditch or worse oncoming traffic or the back of another car. I cannot speak for others I can only speak from my 30 years of experience and training in the tire business and make my reccomendations based on that. I have sold all tire brands, I am in Illinois where we deal with plenty of cold and snow and I am in an area where all we do is deal with high performance cars, Corvettes, Bmws, Mercedes, Lexus, Porsche,Audi. I have been dealing with high performance summer tires long before the 5th gen Camaro was even on the drawing board. In my opinion you should not be driving a camaro with the OE summer tires in the winter. All it takes is one time for disaster. In my opinion why would you want to risk it. Put snow tires on and be safe it is a nite and day difference.

I ran Yokohama Parada Spec X (all season snow rated) last winter and felt in control. The ride was great. Its my daily driver so it saw everything St. Louis winter had to offer. I did leave it parked a few days when the snowfall exceeded 8 inches and temps near zero or below. I've been driving Camaros in St. Louis winters since 1979. Its a skill and having the right tire is a plus. It's a personal choice but for my driving style a good all-season tire is a plus in winter.
