It's supposed to.

Ethanol has (at best) 75% of the energy as gasoline by volume. And flex-fuel vehicles are optimized for gasoline...NOT Ethanol. They are simply compatible with ethanol:

A true ethanol-specific engine would have a diesel-like Compression Ratio, to take advantage of ethanol's ~104 octane rating. This would increase burn-efficiency and help to increase fuel mileage while using ethanol...but obviously, the more widely-used gasoline would not like an engine like this. 104 Octane is racing fuel....

But think about it this way...in terms of range, 1.5gal of ethanol = 1gal of gasoline, roughly.

Soon in the future, gasoline will reach $5.00/gal. It's unescapable...UNLESS we provide an alternative to drive demand (and thus costs) down....but I digress, when gasoline gets to that level, 1.5 gallons of ethanol will still cost $2-$3 bucks. THEN...the lower efficiency will be okay, because per mile, it's less expensive to use ethanol.

Yeah, ultimately it will come down to whats cheaper to drive. Same thing goes with hybrids or diesels. Green-oil holds a lot of promise, particularly $4/gal gasoline or more, which is still pretty cheap. Thats about what we pay in Canada, and a little more than half of what Europe pays right now. These alternative fuel companies will be laughing if gas hits $6/gal in the US.
