if you still plan on getting the full kooks exhaust system, check out maryland speed (www.marylandspeed.com). They are a sponsor on here and have a GREAT price for the complete system (I think it's like $4-500 under retail). I highly doubt you will find a cheaper price then what I saw from them. I looked for a few weeks before I pulled the trigger on my kooks exhaust system. Then a few days later, maryland speed had its sale and well.... I was angry. lol.

I think I'm actually getting a better price from IPS because I am going to have them install it. I did check maryland speed and they are close in price though.

I called Kooks to ask them what they recommend for my car. They also recommend the 1 7/8" primaries. They said on older cars, they would have recommended the 1 3/4 but for the new Camaro V8, they say to go with the 1 7/8.

All hail danhr!

Thanks to all of you for your help.

I went with the Kook's setup and I'm glad I did. Sounds great at idle and sounds Bad A$$ at WOT. I opted for the 1-3/4" LT's going for more torque but after seeing the results from Ted's header test I guess I was wrong . If I remember right there was only 5 or 6 hp difference between the 1-3/4" & 1-7/8" and even less difference in torque. I'm happy with my purchase and the price I got from Branden at Maryland Speed was really too good to pass up. After the Custom Street Tune by Shawn at Ragin Racin I picked up 50 rwhp & right at 44 Tq over my stock baseline I'm at 410 rwhp & 408 Tq. It's not the biggest gain by any means but I'm smilin'

Here is a great test about the HP gains for different size headers:

Hope that helps.

Kooks sometimes just sells the headers alone, without a connection pipe/y-pipe and sells them seperatly, as a lot of people like to fab up their own. the 2" primary header costs so much because a lot more of r&d goes into that particular header, as clearances are extra tight with the big primaries.

I've said this before and will say it again.... 1 7/8 = . I don't think any ls3 motor deserves 1 3/4 headers. and if you need 2" primary headers, you are making one serious motor and probably don't need to bother asking if you need them, because you should already know that much if you are building a motor that badass
yea 1 7/8 is all ive been looking at.. thought 2" but for only maybe 550whp to 600wHP 2" going to kill more low end then what it make up for it top end im thinking.. one shop said 2" for like 800HP.

After a nice conversation with Ted at Jannetty Racing and another with Jeff at IPS Motorsports, I've decided to just do headers for now.

I may just find the headers alone are all I need to get the sound and performance boost I'm looking for. Also, I can always change out the exhaust later. By putting in a good set of headers, then my CAI intake that I'm putting in tomorrow will be even more effective.

I think this is a good first step in the process. I will let you know which headers I settle on as I explore this further.

You have all been very helpful! Thanks.

Looks like most people responding back have the LS3. I too have the L99 and looking for the good sound. I know I am going kooks 1 7/8 headers and kooks high flow cat back but still confused on cat back system. I plan on tuning it out. Are most people with L99 getting rid of the resonators too?

cybercoaster -
I'm going to leave them in for now. I am worried about the drone in the L99 at highway speeds. So my plan is to put in a CAI intake and headers first. I'll leave in the stock exhaust from the cats back and see how it sounds like that. I will probably have IPS tune out the AFM. If that doesn't seem to rumble enough, then I'll move on from there perhaps withe a magnaflow exhaust of some sort.

I want my car to be "throaty" but not drone. And, I don't want it to be annoyingly loud. I just want to know there's a V8 under the hood.

This has been a very interesting topic to learn about. I'm sure I have a long way to go before I'm done.

that sounds like a very good plan! the stock exhaust just might have the flow characteristics that you are looking for. With the added headers and cats (cats help keep the rasp down), you should have a very healthy sounding exhaust.

In fact... I want a sound clip when you are done
