Randy, we will be replacing the PAPER exhaust manifold gaskets with OEM GM MLS gaskets to cure the HUGE exhaust leak pouring out of cylinder 6 & 8. This should cure the surging issue as well as the loud "ticking" coming from the engine.

Ill snap some pics of the "damage" as soon as I can get a chance to sneak out into the shop.

She should be purring like a kitten (with a nice lope) in just a few days.

Also in our defense, it was Sunday in Jacksoneville and I had to be back in Mobile, AL by 5 the next day. No time to wait. Plus it was running great. But we see I should have went back and done it. Could have done it without even taking the headers off.

You got full life out of those paper ones. Round trip to AZ, F Body Gathering..... you got your money's worth out of them. Just a part that wears out quicker than the metal ones. At least it's an expendable part!

Lotta frustration though.

I still want to know what why and how it makes the engine surge/miss like that.

I'm still going with back pressure. The only reason I don't think it was messing with the O2 sensors is you never got a CEL. I'm outta idears on this one. Ron will let you know.

I never had any legit idears.

But I thought in a closed loop system that the o2 sensors tell the computer when and when not to add how ever much fuel based on it's reading.

I'll ask Ron when I get a chance.

You sir are correct! I'm doing some lookin' and have found this so far. The sensor mentioned in this writeup doesn't pertain (except the O2 sensor) and looks like it could be it;

Quote:
My idle surge was a result of the following situation:

The idle switch is depressed (foot off the gas)
Too much air is getting through the throttle body (ISC stuck open)
O2 sensor registers lean mix (too much air)
ECU adds fuel to achieve correct mix
RPMs increase due to increased fuel/air supply
At 1500 RPM the ECU goes into decel mode and cuts fuel (*)
With only air coming into the engine, the RPMs drop rapidly
At 1200 RPM the ECU turns the fuel back on
Goto 2.
Still reading. But this could be it. The writer also stated he never got a cell because the O2 sensors were doing what they were supposed to and sending the correct signals. However, after much much $$$ at a dealer, they found an exhaust manifold leak.

yeah...header leaks even on my turbo buick screw with the O2 sensor big time. They can toss the tune for a loop.
