here's my idea: Z28 has all the weight saving they can possibly do, and the LS3. 1LE has an LSA and a normal body. ZL1 has the weight of the Z28 with the LSA motor. as far as looks, the 1LE and ZL1 both would look as much like an LS or LT as possible, including NO badging, while the Z comes with a different grille a much taller lip spoiler, and other styling differences.
What do you guys think? |

I'm torn on what should be a ZL1. On the one hand it was famous for its aluminum 427, the logical choice for a modern one would be the LS7. On the other hand, it was meant to be a drag racer which means that all out power is best even if it means a bit of extra weight, so a supercharged 6.2 would work well.

my feelings about the ZL1 and Z28 or next tier camaro.
whatever the next tier camaro after the SS is it will more then likely be the GT500 fighter the majority here is looking for. Personally I feel it's better suited to be called the ZL1 because of the power output and what it's going after. The Z28 was more a road racer and I personally feel it should remain that way. I'm not saying it should be hampered by a smaller engine or power but the car should be lightened thorough higher priced materials all around. and then suspension race prepped (give us double adjustable shocks and such). I for one am willing to pay for that. No matter what I'll be happy between those two. by the time it comes out is when my truck will be paid off and all I'll have is a house payment with a nice size-able down payment. |

My opinion is that the Z28 lost that track car feel about it in the 3rd and 4th gens, and I think that a stripped SS with more power will have trouble selling now days. If you think about it, a large majority of the people able to afford a car of this price won't want to give up options available in the SS, so it stands to reason that GM will want to make this monster maro a more powerful, better handling SS with a new name. Just reflecting, please no hard feelings.

4th gen yea but we can go back to the heritage thing which is what has inspired this 5th gen. and I didn't say it should be stripped. I was saying that lighter more race inspired parts should be used along with the same hp out put. it would be lighter and faster because of the race tuned suspension and lighter parts. |

lol, yeah the IROCZ could have been more inspired but I follow what you mean. Are you suggesting the Z28 put out the same power as the SS?

why not? if it's lighter and has a better suspension it would in essence be faster. it could have a small bump in power. I'm talking about a mid 30 to sub 40k car. seeing how we suspect the SS to be below 30 starting out and fully optioned over 30. I'm looking at the Z28 as being possibly 35k-ish to low 40's optioned out. lighter, better suspension, and maybe a slight bump in power. would be worth it imo.

I just don't think they would have enough buyers for the car with just suspension mods they could do themselves. I feel that most people are looking for this "gt500 fighter," a 500ish hp Camaro with a factory warranty. IMVHO.

you're right about more people wanting the gt500 fighter. but the shocks and spring setup along with carbon fiber parts and a slight bump in power from the factory covered by factory warranty would be better then doing it yourself. and we're talking a car that would run 33k-40ishk optioned out. where as a gt500 would be 43k to 50k. nice middle ground for the z28.

Don't get me wrong (please,) I hope you can get what you want, and I'm sure it's possible to do, but not within the cost confines you're thinking. I'm sure a car like that would be pushed right into GT500-fighter catagory. I'd love to be proven wrong though

Yeah, I'd love to see GM do what Boxmonkeyracing is proposing. But, I'm thinking the Z28 will be limited to bolt on performance mods. Maybe stealing from the Z06 or ZR1? It's hard for me to imagine in depth chassis retuning for the Z28.

+1 If they stuff the LSA in there, I'm sure they'd pop' for tuning on the 'Ring, because if we thought 4,000 lbs. was heavy for the SS, another 100 lbs.+ is going to probably require some more R&D. Most of that will be over the front tires with all the plumbing and the lung, so I'm sure it'd push pretty bad.

I dont think aluminum suspension and carbon fiber could be done that cheap and doing it yourself wouldn't impact your warranty nearly as much as motor mods to attain 500hp.
