Canadians would have Canadian car companies and pay import/export taxes like the rest of the car companies from Japan, Germany, England, etc. that want to sell cars in the United States and I would certainly expect the same penalties apply to GM for selling cars outside of the United States. Just please do not try to make a case that buying Chevrolet/GM is supporting America because it isn't in so many ways.
You are joking right! I sure hope so! You really believe that an American company can only sell to America, only build in America. You really believe that this is the way a company competes in todays world! If you don't think GM is American what do you think it is?

Silver, seriously, that is my point. GM needs to build plants in Canada, Mexico and the United States just to compete. You and I both know that, but to completely buy into the "Chevrolet/GM is as American as Apple Pie" nonsense is just as irresponsible as saying that GM can survive solely by building it's products solely in the United States, and sell all over the world without a problem. That is why I don't approve of people blindly saying GM is synonymous with America because it is completely untrue. But everybody can believe what they want. That is one of the freedoms of being a true American! We may outsource building cars and just about everything else in this country, but at least freedom of belief and choice are true freedoms that are synonymous with being American!

All true, but it does not make them any less American. It is just an American company competing in todays demands.

Gm is as American as you can get when buying cars these days. They are still headquartered in the USA and and have a substantial workforce here. I am not sure what the numbers currently are because of the current economy but GM alone used to employ more people in the US than all the foreign manufactures combined. For some information about the impact of the Big 3 and employment figures go to this website. http://www.levelfieldinstitute.org/
Or you could come to Michigan and see how slowing automakers have decimated our economy for years now.

I envy all you who have a new Camaro on order, I drove many a Camaro (my last a '69) and now drive my '77 Firebird. What really impresses me is that you get like 29 mpg with the 400 hp motor! Well, I wonder how true that will be when you guys (and any gals) step on it, let me know, but best of luck!

Just because GM has factories in other parts doesn't make them less american. Are the Yankees less American because they have non American players. Come on!

There always seems to be a stereotypipcal pissing contest between enthusiast groups. It's a natural human necessity to feel like you're "the best", especially among those who are passionate...I mean, I doubt most people here, there, or any other site would be very happy if their car of choice wasn't the best at something. Imagine that the car that just went into production was a 300hp-V8 4200lb Camaro with 21mpg hwy and GTO-esque styling, for instance...Feeling a bit inadequate at the moment!?!

The truth is...all these cars can coexist without the constant comparisons and false justifications for which is 'better'. And in that mindset, I don't give a rat's a$$ what anybody thinks of the car. I like it....no, I love it! And that's all that matters. So I say to anyone who makes a point of insulting it (like some of those folks): "Piss off."
