the reason you can push a manual to start it is because the clutch is pushed in until the time comes to engage it and hopefully, start the car.
trust me, you, or just about anybody for that matter, would not be able to push a manual in 1st gear or reverse with the clutch engaged.

i ALWAYS set the parking brake, let it settle on it, and then throw it in 1st gear. my driveway is actually pretty a pretty steep incline and i have seen a car or two in this neighborhood resting at the bottom of their driveway or in the neighbor's lawn.
i know it recommends reverse, but i have always used 1st, so that will be what i continue to use. if i park on a ridiculous incline one day, i will use reverse, since it's a bit shorter than 1st.

every vehicle i have used as my DD, except the first, has been a manual transmission and that's how i was taught. parking brake, let it roll a bit to settle, and then 1st gear. This whole concept is yet another reason i like manuals over autos. autos are nearly idiotproof. you REALLY have to mess up to have your car roll after parking in an auto. the same goes for stalling

I was taught to park in reverse so that's what I do.

Can not shut the car off without it being in first and the oh shit handle pulled up tight. Also can't start it without the seat belt being clicked in... habit.

when it's over 100F outside and closer to 120-130 inside the car, the first thing i do when i sit in the car is start it up to get that A/C flowing first. i can't release the parking brake though without first putting on my seat belt, out of habit.

i always leave it in first and set the parking brake unless im at the track. no parking brake on hot rotors.
The parking brake doesn't clamp your rotors like the calipers do. The parking brake works just like the way drum brakes work. It expands 2 pads on the inside of your rotor.

I've heard the reason for reverse is because it saves the battery. Not sure if that's true, but that's what I've heard.

I keep mine in neutral and just use the ebrake. I've never had a problem.

Yep seen one post that was right. GM has the car set up to kill the power to the car and kill part of the ECM when you are in reverse with the key off after 10 min or so. Also you will not push the car in gear as low as R.
But I find my self putting the car in N with the parking brake in my garage. With the monster battery that's in the Camaro I don't see it going dead anytime soon.

Most of the Phoenix aea where I live and drive/park is pretty flat. I've stopped putting my car in gear when I park, particularly where the possibility of it being hit exists. I figure there would be less damage, given the same hit, if the car wasn't in gear, as my drivetrain wouldn't be engaged.

If it's an incline of any sort, I'll put the car in 1st or reverse.

Yes the parking brake is inside the hub of the rear brakes and are small drum and shoe design.

gotta be careful with this stuff, i had an old explorer with bad compression. left in first on a hill and totally rolled down the hill. incredibly slowly. and i still leave the car in first, and one day in a 4runner the shifter did not drop all way in because i dropped it down after the engine stopped. after i got out the shifter popped back out of gear and rolled the the hill. still not a fan of parking brakes though.

This. Reverse is always a lower gear than 1st and will hold the car better. 1st will usually be fine, but if you're parked on a steep hill always park in reverse and yank your park brake hard.

My '77 had to be parked in reverse to lock the steering column and remove the key. Still park manuals in reverse.

Wow.

Engine turns more times per revolution of the drive shaft in lower gears than higher gears, hence why engine RPMs drop when you go into a higher gear. If your first gear ratio is 4:1, the engine turns 4 revolutions for every revolution of the drive shaft, not the other way around.
