Here's the Supreme Court case that laid out the rule, Delaware v. Prouse:

Except where there is at least articulable and reasonable suspicion that a motorist is unlicensed or that an automobile is not registered, or that either the vehicle or an occupant is otherwise subject to seizure for violation of law, stopping an automobile and detaining the driver in order to check his driver's license and the registration of the automobile are unreasonable under the Fourth Amendment.

Under the Fourth Amendment, the police cannot pull you over unless they have reasonable suspicion to believe you've violated the law.

"Community relations" isn't an excuse. They also can't do it just to check your driver's license and registration, unless they have a reason to think there's something wrong with them. If they don't have reasonable suspicion, they're violating your constitutional rights.

In my town, which is quite large, I'm not likely to be making a "friend" because I will never see them again.

Furthermore, there is an abundance of unsolved crime around here. Any cop who is wasting his (and my) time by pulling me over for no reason is doing a disservice to the community.

I've had plenty of people want to talk about my car. When I'm in a hurry I just politely excuse myself and say I'd be happy to show it to them another time. I'm sure that would work with a cop camaro fan too

i cant believe people are complaining about this. i would rather him pull me over to just look at the car, than be a dick and pull me over, give me a ticket, all to just look at the car.

as much as i can not stand cops. right now id have to just give in, i mean like everyone else has said could save you in the near future. and they are people to. but i feel woot on the abuse of power, but just not in this particular situation.

Why couldn't he just pull up next to you and ask you to pull over instead of forcing you into it?
