Same here. Weird reading these stories as if going that fast is reckless when you have driven in Europe over 100mph for hours on end. We have sections in TX with 85 mph limits, lots of people cruising 90+. However with almost zero lane discipline, poorly maintained cars, and distracted drivers, we are not Europe. 80-85 can be reasonable.

Honestly no, but I've only done triple digits one time. Was coming up on my exit, none of the trucks were letting me over, even when I sped down to get behind.

Next exit was literally fifteen miles away. So I hit 107 and sped up until I hit the ramp. I would have gotten a serious ticket, because it's a 55 MPH zone.

I've been over 100 a few times, usually when soccer mom finally finds the middle lane and all else is clear. I guess I've been up there a dozen or so times on the highway but never for very long. I've never been caught. I'm a helicoter pilot and so I know what's safe and what's not even in a car. Still I doubt any cop will see it that way, he's got a job to do.

I'm orginally from PA and I know if you're doing over 30 mph over the speed limit, even 61 in a 30, it's automatic 6 points and a suspension. Or it's written that way anyway. Like others have said, it depends on the cop and the situation. I was pulled over once on 476 doing 85 in a 55 (well before becoming a pilot). The statey was cool as shit, he basically said he doesn't expect me to drive like an old lady but when it's crowded, slow it down. I said fair enough and he gave me a warning...

I'm not proud of this but in 1992, I was driving my 1992 Camaro RS (a whopping 170hp, if I remember correctly) like an idiot. I was stopped for doing 95 in a 35. The police officer was kind enough to knock the ticket down from a 12-point moving violation with a $500 fine to a 5-point moving violation and a $255 fine.

I showed up at the hearing to see if I could reduce the points (I was in my early 20s, and didn't want my insurance to go up or drop me), by throwing myself on the mercy of the court. Upon arriving, I could not believe me luck. A quick glance around the courtroom revealed that the officer who wrote me the ticket was not present. Knowing a little about getting out of tickets back then, I knew that, if the officer was not present, I would have a good chance of having the ticket thrown out. So, I pled not guilty expecting the judge to find in my favor since the officer failed to show. However, to my shock, the judge ordered the clerk to contact the officer immediately and demand that the officer make it to the courthouse posthaste. I was told to take a seat while the rest of the cases were heard. Finally, after everyone's case had been heard but mine, the judge calls me back up. He explains that they were unable to get in contact with the officer so he was forced to dismiss the ticket. However, he explained to me that at the speed that I was traveling and the danger to those around me that I posed, he would have not only suspended my license but he would have reinstated the higher fine (apparently that was written on the ticket by the officer). Before dismissing me and the case he stated, "some days are diamonds and some days are dust, you just found a rough-cut. You are free to go."

That experience scared me enough to slow my driving down, but it also gave me a new found respect for the law. As a result, I decided to go to law school and become a lawyer. So, despite my stupid actions, the judge was correct, I was lucky. I was not only lucky for getting out of the ticket, but I was also lucky because I found a career.

I live in Northern VA, if you can find a place to do triple digits that's not infested with the worst traffic ever, then more power to you!

I have been pulled over quite a few times over the last 20 years. Many of the reasons I was pulled over was for "having a modified truck that did not meet some criteria"...... I dismissed most of those, but learned the good and bad of being stopped. The worst 2 experiences I ever had was in my 1st Gen S10 with a 383, and the latter in my 10 2SS.

One evening heading to the bowling alley, with my then gf, I had two people pull out in front of me, cutting me off, then going 35 in a 55. After 3 miles on a 4 lane road, with no traffic in front of them, I couldnt take it anymore and decided to go around them. I conducted the pass in a legal manner using the 3rd lane that opened up...... I just did it in an excessive manner. (Downshifted, punched it, ran out 2nd and 3rd on a TH350......) None the less, I saw the LEO as soon as I let off the throttle. Exactly how fast was I going, I don't know... in the 115-120 area. None the less, the LEO did not hit me with radar, and didn't know how fast I was going, but knew I was hauling ass..... After a 45 minute lecture, and realizing I was not a 16 year old kid out joy riding, he actually let me go with a warning..... I thought I was going to jail that night.

Fast forward 10 years...... On Christmas day, in my 2SS, I was driving up I-95 from Miami to Orlando..... After becoming aggravated, again, I started to drive aggressively. Very stupid on my part, but I was in the moment. None the less, after about 15 miles of trying to catch up to me in an unmarked LEO vehicle, blacked out Charger, he was close enough to turn on his lights. As soon as I saw him, I pulled over quickly, put the windows down, shut the car off, put my keys on the dash, grabbed my paperwork, and put my hands on the steering wheel, and waitied for him. After explaining where I was going and stating that I am an idoit for driving so aggressively, he gave me a short lecture and said be careful about driving like that, especially on Christmas and a long trip. I amazingly got off with a warning there.....

But with these two lucky stories, I have received my share of tickets, and I understand that I will pay to play, if I choose to play. I am just play a bit wiser on the road and leave the high speeds for the track.....

Probably explains the CEL.

Last thanksgiving I got a warning in home state for speeding. Most the of the 11hr trip is 75mph until I get to my good ol' home state, Georgia. I was cruising in the left lane on 400N when a BMW speeds up to my rear with the brights on. I move over a lane to the right, and the person moves over with me and then passes me on the right. They immediately jumped two lanes over back into the fast lane, and continued to drive erratically around me. So, I figured they'd be an easy target for the police, and that I could get away with a couple mph faster. I was doing 80 in a 65 thinking I was in a 70 (I need to go home more often... Forgetting my speed limits). The BMW did get pulled over first, but the highway patrolman deftly pulled me over as well. He came to my car first. I had everything I needed out on the passenger seat and my hands on the wheel. He came and gave me a brief lecture and then said "I'll be back with your paperwork after I get his info." After 15 years of driving I was finally getting a speeding ticket.

It was while he was getting the bimmer's info that the overwhelmingly strong smell of marijuana washed past my car. And the officer came back with a warning, and said "be careful who you ride with this guy's a dope-head." Lots of morals for this story. Best two are 1)pay attention to the posted speed limit and 2) get pulled over with a sense of humility about yourself (personal pride doesn't serve one well in traffic court).

Our roads can't compete with Europe. Their high-speed roads (and even most secondary roads) are smooth and designed/built for speed and very well maintained. Our roads suck and anything over 75-80 mph is unsafe because of it.

New cars usually come out mid Summer to the beginning of Fall the year before their model year.

So a 2013 Camaro could have been purchased in say... August of 2012.

That was 12 months for August '12 to August '13
Then 9 months from Aug. '13 to May 2014

That's 21 months total.

That's only 1571 miles per month

Or 392 miles per week

Or 56 miles a day in a 7 day week

Or 78 miles per workday per week and no driving on weekends.

So. Some guy buys a 2013 Camaro and drives it to work 5 days a week, 28 miles to work and 28 miles back each day. (That's only a couple miles more than my work commute per day). And the same guy takes a spin on the weekends adding up to 112 miles.

But you seem to think that's not just improbable, it's downright unlikely.

Why is that?

As for the OP's question. None of my cars can exceed the speed limit. I find it very strange but true. Also, a good rule of thumb for not getting caught also includes never admitting to it. Just an FYI.

I bought a 2013 LS in late June or early July of 2012 (first 2013 off the truck in Georgia) and it had 35k on it when I traded it for a 2010 SS last month.

Kern County CA in 2007. Just rented an Impala SS for a business drive from LAX to San Luis Obispo. Opened it north of the 76 station with a pair of coupes, got to about 115 and decided to back down. Aircraft gets me before I get below 100. Court date comes and I got the minimum: 2 weeks suspension, $715 fine. Other two cars I never saw again because I slowed and they didn't.

When I was a kid, 19 I believe. I had a 1973 Firebird Formula 400. Was driving from CA. to Oregon to pick a girlfriend up from her Grandmothers. My buddy and I were going all smokey and the bandit. We were hitting speeds well over 150, I saw a little bitty dot in the rear view. Like an Idiot I slowed down, it was Eureka Highway Patrol. He scolded me, and told me he should take me to jail... He did not because he asked to look under the hood, and said "this car would get raped in impound." Let me go with a ticket that said 120+. That ticket cost over $1,000.00
