First I want to say I'm not trying to cause trouble with this, but if you dont like it because it originated from the Mustang then that's like saying you dont like the Camaro since it originated because of the Mustang.

From being there in the 60's & 70's cruising Woodward and Gratiot there wasn't any one group of cars that were the Muscle cars. Basically any car you could put a big block in was considered a Muscle car. There were a lot of small blocks running around, but weren't really considered Muscle cars. And yes some of the Pony cars were Muscle cars. Anything with a SS or CJ or anything with Shelby or Yenko were considered very Muscle. Generally speaking the small block cars were considered Hot Rods. It's the big blocks that put muscle in Muscle Cars.....

Good Grief. THis is silly.
This Pony Car split is pure rubbish as far as I am concerned. If it has a high horsepower motor in it, is fast, is bad ass lookin', and basically from one of the Traditional North American Manufacturers, then its a Muscle Car, Pony Car, or whatever. It has presence and attitude, that no Rice Burner will ever have. Not to say there aren't some interesting Rice burners out there , but, I am a bit old school and pretty Loyal to GM/Ford/Chrysler.

Technically the Camaro was never a muscle car. It was a pony car. The definition of a muscle car is a midsize car with a v8 that seats four comfortably. The GTO in it's original form was the original muscle car. So the OP is right. the Camaro is not a muscle car and never has been sorry.

Everyone says it doesn't matter where camaros are built but come on what sounds better built in Detroit or built on Oshuwa or whatever it's called.

A sports car is a low-slung coupe, with swoopy lines and good handling. It may or may not have gobs of power, but it's fun to drive and looks sleek. A muscle car more of an upright and muscular looking coupe. It's wide, has a rumbling V8 under the hood, and powerful looks to go with it. In my opinion, the Camaro straddles the line between the two extremes. That's what makes it a pony car. It's more upright and muscular looking than a typical sports car, but it's a coupe with nice lines that's fun to drive and looks great. Adding a V8 pushes it into muscle car territory, in my opinion. Without, it's more of a sports car or a sports coupe... although 300+ HP is more than some old-school muscle cars had, so it's really a judgment call. In terms of looks, I think the 5th gen is designed to be more of a muscle car, whereas the 4th gen was designed to be more of a sports car. Either way, they're all pony cars, but the styling and performance has leaned to one side or the other over the years.

If the Camaro weren't a "muscle car" wouldn't it have some unreliable quad turbo V6 under the hood instead of MUSCLE!?

I don't think it's a muscle car...but the country it's built in has nothing to do with the way I feel about it.
