Hey man your young and you have a dream to have a nice car, who doesnt? but Im telling you if you buy that car making as much as money as you make you probably will only have it for a couple months before it gets repoed then your credit is shot and credit is what your financial life is based around. Im 22 and make nearly make 4 times more than you do an being 18 you probably dont have a stable job anyways. First at 18 making double the amount of your car payment and insurance per month you will not get approved for a loan trust me. If you did your intrest rate would be nearly 18-20% which is not even worth it. If I were you man go to college get that over with or atleast 2 years and find at least a job that will pay around 30k/year and be stable then work on saving for an expensive car. Buy a 10K and build your credit and if you feel you can be responsible enough to buy a camaro go for it!

BTW resale value on a V6 is just as good as a v8

I am over 50, love muscle cars, and decided the V6 was great after driving it.
I had the opposite argument with my dad way back then. I wanted a Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am, and he told me I would have to move out if I bought a car with an 8 cylinder. He was not into fast cars at all.
Well...I moved out and was still able to get my dream car. A brand new 79 GoldBird with the last big block ever offered. Was it easy? NO. But I did what I needed to do...for me...and I have never regretted it.
But again, I am personally VERY happy with my 2LT V6 Rally Sport. It has all of the luxury and looks of the 2SS, and enough power to still make me remember I am driving a Camaro. V6 owners get dissed a lot on these boards, but as long as I am happy, so be it.
BTW, I am with you. I owned a 67, 74 and two 76 Camaros. I skipped generation 3 and 4. But when I saw the 5th generation, I knew I would be driving one.
And I am and I am LOVING it.

The 2LT has the same (I think) gauges in the center console. Atleast mine does.

Take him to test drive. I'm sure he doesn't realize how much car your getting. Wether it's the V6 or V8, it's alot of car. The V6 is putting out as much HP as the V8's from the 90's. Of course I got the V8 because I'm the opposite of you. I'm a power junky and I can do without the comfort features. What ever car I buy it has the be the largest engine available. The last NEW car I got was a 2007 Nissan Sentra. I had to get the Spec-V of course. For the price I could have got something with better features, but it wouldn't have had the most powerful engine.

What us older and wiser people are trying to tell you is that it is not OK to spend most of your income on ANY one thing. I know it seems cool to have a cool car when you are young but you have to realise that buying that car now and spending all your income now on it will tie you down for 5 years. 5 years is a LONG time.
Just remember that $700 a month is a LOT of money. Its money you can use to establish your life. A lot of us were as young as you and If I had $700 a month extra when I was your age I would have been a LOT richer now.
Dont put your life on hold for 5 years for a car. All of us here are gear heads and love the camaro but ultimately its just a car.

BTW If none of what I said above is of any use then In answer to your original question get the v6. I am a Software Engineer and make a very tidy sum of money but I still got the v6 because it just seems a better value for me. So for someone in your situation its an exact match.
Well written!

Get a 1ss. Same price as the 2lt pretty much. Add what you want for upgrades to it later....

LOL. You fought your father and moved out over a V8, and now that you are older you bought a V6? Thats funny.

I take back what I said earlier. OP, you only live once. Get the V8 and have a blast. Worlds ending in 2012 anyways.

lol I know, I know. But compared to the Other Sentras it had lots of power and at the time I was into Auto-X also. Besides I got to drive my mothers Z06 when ever I visited them on the weekends. I also have a supercharge 3.3L Subaru SVX. I put the Supercharger and a 2004 STi drivetrain(after nuking the automatic trying to tune the supercharger) in the car and wanted to stop using it as a daily drive so I bought the Spec-V.

First - 100% with you on feeling the need for this car - I was the same way - I saw transformers with no clue what this car was but felt like I had never seen anything more beautiful in my life - I am not a car person. To me, a car was 4 wheels that got me around and maybe had some cool features for the hell of it (and pray it didnt come with a tape deck )

When I first went to order my Camaro I was getting the v6 - it was 30k and I could literally not afford more. I actually NEEDED a new car at the time - not necessarily one this extravagant - but something.
Let me just say -- I have a full time job, I've worked here for 8 years and make decent money - tho after loans and taxes my take homes aroun 2k a month - I also have good job security all things considered.

You may have great creidt - not having had other debt and not having a house or rent, but for real, I agree with others that you can not afford this car. It would be too much for me to afford, however, my only saving grace is that due to my divorce I walked away with over 30k after taxes that I put towards this car.

I know you really want one- I feel you there - I was in the same boat looking at it like you are - HOWEVER....there are so many things you should be spending your money on rather then this car right now....like school (I don;t know if you're paying for that yourself or if parent's are helping you?? Did I miss that anywhere?)
Next year (hell a few months maybe) you can get a used '10 for alot less money.

I was about to slap my face at the thought of a what should I get, 8 or 6 thread. But seeing its about finances, its different, but in a much better way.

My advice, you cant afford it. Not if your parents arent going to help you with the insurance and/or at least some of the cost of the car. You just dont make enough money.

Best case scenerio, you have 500 bucks a month to live off of, seriously?? What about gas money, money to take your girl out, go on trips, maybe one day wanting to buy your girl a nice ring to get engaged, down payment on a house... Have you thought about the cost of the tag every year, the cost of vehicle maint., HEALTH INSURANCE, RETIREMENT PLANNING. Start your 401, start an IRA, it will be worth millions when you retire. Wait until your 30, and you will never catch up to its potential.

You may be able to do it, and I stress "may", but you will be miserable. Man, you have no idea what the next 5 years have in store for you, do you really want to spend them working 2 jobs to pay off a car, hoping nothing goes wrong in the span of half a decade... Its a bad idea on so many levels it makes me twitchy just thinking about it.

I'm not knocking you because your young, or any other reason. If your parents were going to buy it for you and your question was 6 or 8, I wouldnt have even responded. I am like you, wasnt fortunate enough for my parents to buy me a new car, so I did like any other responsible person. I waited. I'm 27, I've got my retirement planned, I've got my degree, I have no debt. Thats when its the right time.

All I can say is the euphoria of having your dream car WILL wear off after about a year, and then it will be like an anchor dragging you down as your supposed to be climbing up at this point in your life.

But since you've said you'll be a knuckle head and do it anyway. I would suggest getting out as cheap as possible. And that would be a used LS v6, if you can find one. If not a used LT. Thats all I have for you. Good luck
