If this scale here was/is accurate, wouldn't this be the recommended fuel octane to be used with that compression ratio engine? If your all worried about saving a few dollars at the pump, maybe you cant really afford this caliber of a car and should get that minivan, or the V6 model. I think I might run mine on Sunoko race gas. If only for the intoxicating exhaust aromas... |

OK maybe I have the wrong attitude, but if you are buying a performance car, but are worried that premium might break the bank, should you really be buying this car instead of a used TDI?
Put premium fuel in it, but just desperately struggle against against every desire of driving it with a lead foot all the time, and you should be OK. |

my 11.8:1 compression LT1 will teach you quickly about detonation and the affects of running a lower octane fuel. My car NEEDS 93 octane. on 89 it'll doesn't like to start- but you can drive it very gingerly. 87 octane and she'll spit and buck and make you pray for Jesus. Only made that mistake once on accident..I will NEVER grab a nozzle without looking closely again. Thank god for forged internal- or I am not so sure mine would've survived that tank of fuel...even after 3 bottles of octane booster(which did help alot).

I bet it would require 91 minimum octane fuel like many other cars

Back in my younger days (late 70s and early 80s) I had a friend that worked at the small airport in town. We occationally filled up my 64 Corvette and old Harley stroker with 108 octane airplane fuel. The 375 HP 327ci and 96ci harley motors loved that gas. He still works there, now they have 102 octane unleaded. I wonder if the new Camaro V8 would like this and would it damage anything?

How about this approach
Do any of you LS engine guys who plug in those engine analyzers know if they allow you to see if the knock sensors are going off reporting back to the computer ( and likley retarding the timing , adjusting mixture ect) and letting you see this in real time? I’d just hook one up and go for a drive.
My take on this is to start with say 89 octane and work your way up till the knock sensor does not trigger any commands to the computer under the conditions you plan to drive in. If you know to avoid logging the engine in the lower gears, you might be able to train yourself to do just fine with a lower octane. If you want to reprogram the computer to squeeze every last bit of HP at all RPMs then making it a point to stay at 93 permanently may be for you so you have more flexibility with timing and fuel curves. I personally don’t believe that other than octane, are the different grades noticeably different. Just my thoughts. P.S. I sure did get a kick out of that “Octane rating is the amount of lubrication in the gas.” As well as “higher octane to protect the engine parts from knocking into each other.” Comments though
