In the end, either side will not admit any kind of defeat rendering the whole competition pointless even if there is clearly a faster average car.

That's what hardcore bias blinders do.
Depends on the outcome of the race. Regardles you're right, there will always be people which no matter what the outcome they will make excuses for everything, so don't worry about them. The rest of us civilized people can tell if both run 12.5X and it's a close race then both cars are equal. If one car consistantly runs a tenth or more quicker it's safe to say that car has a slight advantage.

First off, the 5.0 I drove was very ugly. The wheel package, bright red leather interior and little mini disc brakes did not look good.

Of course, when I started the engine, the Mustang exhaust note was very nice and I thought it sounded much better than the stock SS exhaust note.

I purposely drove the Mustang over an old and somewhat bumby asphalt road to test the live axle and see how it functioned with the entire car's suspension. I have to say, I didn't mind the live axle and the car felt pretty sturdy and smoothe on the uneven pavement.

But, I didn't drive very fast and and I didn't make any quick lane changes so I don't know how the live axle feels when you push things a bit.

The acceleration felt smoothe and linear. Even with the 3.15 rear gears the car picked up speed pretty well. I turned traction control off and launched the car a few times and although the car starts moving pretty well after about 30 mph, down low it didn't feel like it was close to spinning the tires. (However, it was a very hot day and the road and tires must have been pretty hot).

I can see how the manual with the 3.73 gears could deliver an excellent launch.

Did I miss something or is there no "manual" shifting option for the automatic? Also, is there a sport mode akin to the sport mode in the Camaro?

The vision in the Mustang is night and day compared to the Camaro -- so much better.

I really can't stand the retro gauges in the the Mustang -- very ugly to me.

The seats were comfortable but didn't feel as sporty as the Camaro. When you sit down into the Camaro you feel like you're getting into a sporty car and when you shut the door of the Camaro you feel like you're in a vault.

I have been thinking of getting a new Mustang or a new GT500. The GT500 appeals to me because the engine is built for boost, but I just wish the interior was a little more refined for the price.

Apparently, the Mustang options that I like are pretty rare because there are no models like I would want on sale in Southern California. I would go with the Kona blue (no stripes), black premium interior, Brembo brake package and the 3.73 limited slip.

Overall, I am very impressed with the new Mustang's performance. I wish the interior looked a little more refined (I wish the same thing for the Camaro). I also wish the automatic transmission had a better rear gear option.

I still like the way the Camaro SS looks compared to the Mustang GT. But I think the 2011 GT500 with the performance package looks the best.
Nice review.

I hate to toss fuel on this fire, but Justin @ VMP tuning said something similar to this when tuning his 5.0. . . He said the "soft" limiter basically cut the throttle position back at WOT even before the actual limiter on low mileage vehicles. Could be a break in thing, but I am not sure. I'm not saying the guy is right, but he's not the first person to say something similar.

Yea I watched a video where he talked about a soft and hard limiter.

The car does have a "soft limiter" and a "hard limiter". The first is at 6850 rpm. At that engine speed, apparently the ECU does 'dial-back' the throttle. The "hard limiter" is at 7000 rpm. I'm not sure if it is fuel or spark cutoff.

Either way, the engine makes peak power at 6600. There is no limiter down there, and at that point, full throttle is full throttle, and the engine makes what it is supposed to. Revving higher than 6850 (or 7000) isn't going to make any more power, though it certainly does extend the useful rpm band.

Of note, the 5.0 is showing good gains with nothing more than a tune (20+ RWHP), but those are not from 'fixing' a throttle that won't electronically open.

Either way....I feel cheated.

I had my MT SS dynoed on a Mustand Dyno...and I got 358.7RWHP.
What exactly does this mean. The throttle is only 86% open with the pedal floored? I heard something similar about the 4.6L Mustangs once back around 2005. What was your source on this?

there is so much more to this. The number one reason why the 5.0 handles better is because of the weight difference. you cant honestly say the irs is inferrer to a live solid rear axel when it comes to handling.

if the camaro weighed the same as the mustang i think allot of these stats would be different.

with that said though, there is nothing wrong with a soild rear in a muscle car. specially if you taking it down the strip. case in piont terminator cobra owner that are making serious power ditching there irs to go with a soild rear.

While the IRS is more "comfortable" for daily driving, etc., I just can't see it standing up to big horsepower mods, etc. My 5.0 handles just fine,as do the Camaros I've driven. Yes, the Mustang is a little bumpy, but it is a much more sout application than my 300C with the IRS. They both have their purpose though. Mustangs 15 yeasrs ago, now those were fun to drive (and scary)!

Very well put and I completely agree. i honestly don't think "most" owners of either the Maro or the Stang are using them to their full potential anyway to where the suspension makes that huge of a difference. Both have their flaws and highlights..

Well, I got a 5.0

passenger Trailblazer SS.

What? You thought I bought a Ford!

The camaro will unfortunately have to wait but I am pretty happy with what I got instead. I can pull the boat, comfortably fit the family, and still have something fun to drive. Plus I think it looks pretty nice too.
