I broke it in "normal". I didn't baby it and didnt break it in hard I Just drove normally, usually shifted around 2500-3500 rpm, many times up to 4000 sometimes up to 5000. I varied the speeds and rpm's all over the place and it is a strong motor.

My old LS1 I took it easy on back in 98 for 500 miles and it ran strong and made max power on the dyno at around 16000 miles. 75000 miles 1 qt of oil in 3700 miles, alot due to the lousy pcv system. My 83 305 same thing, lasted 313000 miles, 1 qt dyno oil every 3000 miles as normal.

You have to realize the closest track for me I believe is at least an hour away (if that track still lets regular cars run), the next closest track is like 2 hours away.

Well, Mr. Retentive, it certainly can't be a bad thing.

The smoking? Well, I totally get it.

Thanks for all the posts and responses. I will keep you informed on what happens with the car.
I originally took it in last April and the dealer replaced the valve seals on one side. Didn't do anything. Now almost a year later, It seems they are going to fix the problem. I will keep you posted.

Last question for now....I was told the there will be no need to brake the engine in if its rebuilt. Is that true??

After I read this thread, I though: "Gee maybe I should check my oil!", so I checked my oil, my odometer, and my Oil Life Monitor. My oil is about 1/2 quart low. It's been over 11,000 miles since I changed my oil. My Oil Life Monitor says I've got 7% left. My conclusions are: One, they all don't burn oil, and, Two, I'm going to need to change my oil soon.

We have a 2010 SS in here for a cam swap with NO catchcan and 30k miles....this is the first one I have seen with almost NO oil in the intake!! The owner says it does not use any oil between changes and he drove it as hard as he could from day-one w/out dropping out the syn. When changing the valve springs we pressurize the cylinder and this car has the least amount of leak-down I have seen in ages on a LS3......so you can seat the rings properly w/the factory syn oil!! Just very few end up like this. The car is tracked at Sebring on a regular basis and no catchcan and almost no oil in the intake.

I just read about a thousand pages on your catch cans and related, and I'm ready to order one. Sending PM now.

Just wanted to post an update on my Camaro SS. They did an engine tear down and they determined the rings were stuck (not because of a bad engine break-in) causing burnt pistons. The dealer rebuilt the engine. New pistons, rings, bearings, bushings, seals, gaskets, etc.. Car was burning a little over a quart every 1000 miles. Since early last year I was told this was normal from one dealer, I took it to another and they rebuilt the engine??
I did get a service request number from GM, I called the number and was transferred to a person in the legal department? WOW! The person I talked to did not impress me at all. Something I didn't know about Camaro's, they have a "Cadillac Converter"?. This may be just my luck where I get the bad one but I recommend getting a documented consumption test if you are losing oil.
