Wink Opinions Vary

My baby is definitely a "Supercar" (and don't let her hear otherwise = )!!
This thread is just an exercise in semantics...

Semantics
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Semantics (from Ancient Greek: σημαντικός sēmantikós)[1][2] is the study of meaning. It focuses on the relation between signifiers, like words, phrases, signs, and symbols, and what they stand for.
The word semantics itself denotes a range of ideas, from the popular to the highly technical. It is often used in ordinary language for denoting a problem of understanding that comes down to word selection or connotation.

I would wager that it is. The ZL1 can run with some of the well known exotics, and it put the camaro brand to a new level of performance.

A 55k car that runs 12s in the quarter mile and has plastic all over the interior?

No it's not a supercar...

It is a great performing and rather affordable care...sure as heck. Supercar...not quite.

A Supercar to me is the best of both worlds. Performance and Luxury. My ZL1 meets, IMO, the Performance requirement, but definitely fails in the Luxury requirement. My husband would pick an Audi R8 V10 Coupe for his Supercar fantasy. I on the other hand would choose an Aston Martin Vanquish! Or as I like to call it "Bond, James Bond". Class and style, and we all know how he can perform!

A Porsche 911 Carrera S with all the options can cost nearly 3 times as much, but offers virtually the same performance. Is the fact that someone can have more or equal for less a detriment to supercar status?

So the R8 V10 and Aston Martin are both supercars and the ZL1 is not?

Using the standard bar of Nurburgring.

R8 V10 time = 7:44

Aston Martin DBS (could not find a time for the Vanquish) = 8:02

ZL1 = 7:41.27

So the car is faster than both, is a very streetable dual purpose car with crazy good looks, sounds amazing and gets a ton of attention. But it is not a supercar because it is too cheap and they were cheap on a few interior pieces? If interior luxury matters is the Ferrari F40 a supercar? No luxury in that car for sure. It has crank windows, no radio, and no traditional door handles. By this definition it is not a supercar. How about the Porsche GT3?

If the ZL1 had an "elite" name badge like Ferrari, Lambo, Aston Martin and cost far north of 100,000 USD there is no doubt it would be classed as a supercar. But it is just a Super Camaro and will go down as one amazing car.

BTW Anyone comparing modded cars to stock production cars is dumb. There are built VW Beatles that would crush many modded Camaros. Once you mod a car performance is based on how much time and money is invested. Heck check out this Nissan Juke that would put a hurt'n on many.

http://www.autoweek.com/article/2013...ws01/130619983

So to conclude the ZL1 is not a supercar just a normal car that is faster than many supercars, looks amazing, gets ton of attention but does not cost enough.... I am OK with that.

Since z06 isn't classified as one I would say know. And it's called the "super car killer". Just a true sports car.

Supercar status is not all about performance, it's about the combination and prestige.

At that point, a rattle can painted fox body running 10s and destroying the Nurburgring could be considered a supercar because it has performance? I don't think so. So just cuz it performs doesn't make it a supercar.

The Porsche has it all...name prestige, performance, luxury etc. The ZL1 has performance, but that's about it.

there is sooooooo much more than performance that goes along with the title "Supercar". how many known supercars use the extensive amount of plastic on the interior that the Camaro has...lets compare.

This is a pic of the Lamborghini Murcilago LP640-4 SV. hard to argue that this car wouldnt be a super car....

i see a lot of Carbon fiber and alcantara.

and heres the ZL1

i see a lot of plastic and fake leather.

next would be racing heratige...does the Camaro have a racing heratige? sure...could you campare it to that of Ferrari or Porsche? not a chance.

the next would be price. you cant say that price is relative because you can compare it to other vehicles. so the 2013 ZL1 stickers for $56,550. A Ferrari 458 Italia runs right about $233,509.

i mean to even think the ZL1 is a supercar is crazy. does it deliver supercar performance? sure does. will it piss off a lot of people that purchased Ferraris and the like? hell yea. but a supercar it is not.

That seems like a sound summary.
Each of us will have his or her own view regarding the supercar status of our ZL1s. All that truly matters, just as does our choices of colour, manual or auto, black or polished wheels, and so on, is what we as individual owners think.
Several of you have said the same thing - if we think it is, it is. Good enough. I think that mine is, and I'm darned proud to own this car. I'm good with the opposing view too, because it's yours, not mine, and each of your opinions is as accurate as any other.

Someone mentioned that "expensive" is relative (you mentioned a Prius possibly being expensive to someone, depending upon circumstance, which makes sense to me.).
That said, the owner of the beautiful yellow ZL1 who lives in Norway, who paid over $300,000 to become the owner of what he thinks is the only ZL1 in his country, is probably thinking that yes sir, it is expensive, exclusive, powerful, exotic in his area, so for sure, it darn well is a supercar.

Sooooooo, if his is a supercar, relatively, who is to say that we who own the same car don't also own a supercar?
Sure, it still comes down to individual opinion, but it this may well just pass the test of logic.

No yours is one of over 8,000 made . .

The 5th Generation Camaro ZL1 is NOT a Supercar . . way too many built.

And I own one.

Thumbing thru my car magazines with ZL1 articles trying desperately to find just one writer who called the ZL1 a Supercar. No luck so far. Funny though, all the articles, over a dozen, that had the two cars I mentioned earlier, the Audi R8 and the Aston Martin Vanquish, all/every article called them SUPERCARS. But what do those geniuses know, so what if they write for some car magazine. We all know the "real" experts are right here on this thread. Now on another forum I read a similar thread to which they state: the mustang is a Supercar, and we may as well throw in the Challenger too!
