I'd dispute that by saying that GM engineers probably like eaton blowers better for big performance-only engines, and turbos better for smaller engines....

I don't think they favor one or the other. Though, here's a tidbit: They tried to Turbo the ZR1 before they decided to supercharge it.......

As I recall, bad things happened when they tried that. Can't seem to find anything about the failed turbo LS9.

Not positive on any of the following but . . .
But the basic problem with a really big turbo is heat (oor two kinda big turbos). Second problem is inertia -they take longer to spool up than smaller ones. These same problems exist with superchargers, but the design of a roots type supercharger reduces the effect. So please, correct any inaccuracies there

As Bob Lutz would put it; they had a pretty nasty 'thermal event'. Just not enough room in that Corvette's engine bay for a Turbo or two (don't know what they tried).

No 'spooling' problems with a blower, especially roots. You step on it, it's there. Which is why I love 'em so much. Everything else you said was spot on!

Now that you mention it, it does appear turbos are going on smaller displacement engines. I mean Ford SC'd Lightnings, Cobras, GTs, HDs, and I can't think of what else. A lot of smaller displacement imports use turbos, so maybe turbos are more efficient on smaller engines.

I can see the statement that turbos create heat, and one could say they require more complex cooling and lubrication circuits. I supposed packaging on a small I-4 engine is a lot easier than on a large, wide V8.

And a supercharger tucks in quite nicely into V configuration engines.

Anyhoo, we've sidetracked long enough. thread topic is:

I personally think that the mustang mostly sells becuase of its looks, it suits both a cheerleader and a man looking for good race. I don't think the mustang actually has a chance of being in the competition with the challenger and the camaro. I think fords focus was bringing back the old classic looks....but not the power. I do like the mustang and it is selling but how can you dare put 300hp in it knowing all this competition is going on and even if they do add a 5.0 will it match the 6.+ camaro and the 6.4 challenger. and will there be a z28 camaro or is it just couple and ss??

the New 5.0 will most likely put out close to 400HP... so if the next gen mustang is lighter than our baby we might have a dogfight but i doubt it... I just can't wait to see the 2010 Camaro SS/Z28 vs. the 2010 Boss (maybe?) Mustang a full 1.2 liters of displacement will get the camaro better torque ratings so idk... We'll see...

now the problm is that the challenger has no shelby gt500 fighter I mean that the top horse power for the challenger is the srt8 w/ 425 now what I'm saying is that dodge should have a challenger srt10 with a detund viper engien w/ 500 horse power but now there is going to be a saleen challenger with 500 or 700 horse power

just putting this out there according to autoblog the challenger SRT8 weights in at 4140 lbs. if our estimate of the camaro being at 3800ish lbs is correct that's 300ish lbs difference. with the right gearing and power being close. . .the camaro will slaughter the SRT8 until the refresh 500hp version. . .even then though depends on gearing and final weight.

If and it's a big IF chevy drops the LS3 with 430 horses but calls it 405 (insurance purposes done that on the 4th gens) the SRT8 does not stand a chance in the 1/4 mile 0-60 and so on. for ever 100 lbs of weight savings it's about 1 tenth of a second in the 1/4 mile.

that's the math as it stands.

it also depends on where the power comes in for the 5.0 compared to the 6.2 and 6.4 liter engines. usually comes in later for a smaller engine. why do you think the 5.7 L ls1 does so much better then the new GT's. . .

From all that I know the 500hp 6.4L HEMI for an upcoming SRT8 challenger is still rumor.

The rumors for the 2010 Mustang include a 5.0L V8 for the base GT, a 6.2L V8for a potential Boss edition, and even the twin turbo V6 that others have talked about.

A smaller engine a 5.0L vs a 6.0L for instance, will require some revving to make power usually, but gearing and higher redlines usually make up for what is lost in low end torque.

A perfect example is the new BMW M3 with the tiny 4.0L V8. It only makes 295 ft-lbs of torque, but it is still a 12 second car trapping around 110 mph.

Oh of course a brand new 2010 Camaro will outclass a 2005 Mustang. Wait until the next Mustang comes out to make the comparision.....the camaro will still probably be better, but all the same.

Only time will tell...

In my opinion the camaro wil always outclass a mustang too becuase when they make high powered cars for example the gt500 it suppose to have 500hp but it dynos 440. maybe MAYBE the 400hp mustang (or that suppose to have 400hp) might come out dynoing 370hp but who knows it can actually be 420hp but just called 400hp for insurance purposes....... Only time will tell.
