Why should we STFU about taxes in MA? Isn't that what started this great country of ours? If things keep going in the direction they have been... keep your eyes open for another revolution.

The excise tax has absolutely nothing to do with a 426hp machine vs. a 304hp machine (unless you're talking about how much the car costs). That would be a factor in the insurance costs.

An excise tax is based on the value of your car. The MA excise tax is $25 for every $1000 your car is worth.

So, for those that got a $680 bill (I'm one of them)... That means the state thinks your car is worth $27,200. Each year the value of the car will drop...so your excise bill will drop.

After getting my bill and calling the town clerk and looking online....this is how they actually figure the excise tax:

For the 2ss Rs in MA its valuation at time of sale is $30, 200. It will never drop below that..

for 2009, since is was prior to manufacture year they only assess tax on 50% of the value= 15,100. Depending on when you got your plates...I got in June 2009, so my tax was $221.

For year of manufacture the tax is assessed on 90% of the $30,200 = $27,200 or $680 in tax.

For the 2nd year it will be assessed on 60% of the valuation at time of sale=
$18,000 giving a tax of $450, this is what we'll pay next year.

3rd year it is 40% of the valuation: $12,080 or $303 in tax.

4th year it is 25% of the valuation: $7,550 or $189 in tax.

5th and succeeding years is 10% of the valuation= $3,020 or $75.50.

So no matter how old the 2010 camaro is, the excise tax will never go below $75.50. Gotta love MA.

My excise tax

I just paid $670 for my excise tax. Next year will probably be not as bad. I guess we have to put up with these things. In the end I love my car.

If that's your LS in your signature...you won't be paying $680. The $680 is only for the 2SS/RS. You'll be paying $25/$1000 of the value of your car.

They may only value your car at $20K...and in that case, your excise would be $500.

MA is pretty far off from sucking.
Sure you can pay less taxes to live other places, but there are plenty of other places that are way worse to live.

In regards to the roads, I was down in New Orleans before Katrina and I must say the roads down there were way way worse than around here, I'm sure there are other places that are just as bad.

Ya this state sucks in taxes....I almost cried when I saw my excise (also 680)....maybe it's just me but who the hell has that much lying around?
I know I bought the car and it cost alot but that doesn't make me rich (in fact, I'd think they'd realize it made me broke- LOL)

I do have to say tho that I'm glad they only valued it at 30k - b/c if they assesed it as 90% of what you ACTUALLY paid.....yowza...
