Yep we had an officer speak at one of our association meetings and he said that PG county cops had been writing a lot of tickets over the winter in various neighborhoods because of people warming their cars unattended in their driveways. Now with remote starts people do it more frequently and PG has been writing more tickets because of it.

WHAT?????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????

They gave you a ticket for something you were doing on your own private property?????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????? Because it was going to be unsafe for kids in the neighborhood? Why should you be assuming that kids are going to trespass on your property and be cited for a "possible" danger that is absolutely subjective?

What the hell was the Statute they cited on the Ticket for that?

I'd go to a ticket clinic for that one or pass it to an attorney. That's bogus.:mad0259 :

If you were in a "common" area that would be one thing as there would be an expectation that others could be in your vicinity but if you are on your own private property, then I would think that you'd have the expectation of privacy and no expectation of trespass by anyone.

By this standard, putting bug poison on your lawn could be a citable offense as it could be dangerous to children in your neighborhood.

I would not only fight that ticket, I'd seek reprimand for the officers.

I actually love the rules that Grosse Pointe Farms has - that's what makes it a desirable neighborhood.

Don't cut your grass? The city will - and put a lein on your home.

Blasting Stereo? One warning and then a heathy fine. ( We have outsiders now and then that start down the street blasting the stereo - and the police put a stop to it pronto!)

When someone does not maintain their residence - they pull others' property values down.........

There is a method to the madness and everyone needs to take a step back and take off their homer glasses.
Who am I to tell someone else who works hard and busts their ass to make their money that they cant change their rims in their driveway? It doesn't matter who they are (race/age) or what they drive. The simple fact is that soo many HOA's and neighborhoods are trying to outlaw the simple right to fix your own vehicle.

It's one thing if the vehicle is sitting there for weeks on end. It's an entirely different thing if the guy is working on it in the driveway because the sun is out and puts it back in the garage/drives it away by evening.

I shouldn't have to take my car to a shop to get new brakes put on when 4 hours of my day will let me do it myself. However, it looks like the thought of one car on jack stands for 4 hours is omg end of the world...

It's not my job to babysit kids, nor is it my job to worry about them. Why are your kids in front of my house when I don't have a child for them to play with? Why are they sitting in my driveway playing?

A lot of parents today have zero idea what their kids are doing and most of them actually don't care as long as they are in by a certain period. I speak only about the people in my area, not overall.

There's a big difference between having strict rules and being a complete ass.... I have no qualms about respecting people in a neighborhood. Still, there's a fine line between being strict and bordering on naziism...

Depends on the laws in the vicinity. In Summerville, SC a long time ago, I was driving around on the lawn tractor, mowing the lawn in the front drinking my beer. We did have a HOA from hell, but I don't think they were the issue here. Anyway, a county cop stopped in the road just past my house, backed up and drove in the driveway. I stopped the mower and got off. So I thought I'd be cute by saying, "What's the issue? Was it because I was drinking and driving?" pointing to the mower.

Partly. He said it was illegal for me to be "drinking in public". WTF? I'm at my own house on my own property! Didn't get a ticket because I took the beer inside. He explained the law essentially said if you were drinking beer in public view, even in your own front yard or on the porch as I was, you were in violation. Backyard behind the fence? No problem. Don't know if he was making that up or not, but why would he waste time by stopping and backing up just to tell me that?

HOA's can be good in a way, but like government, can be WAY too intrusive in some parts. Think of how big government wants to run the country in the same way...shudder the thought.

Absolutely right. We cross a fine line when we decide to legislate morality and responsibility and begin to become, and support, a police state.

Is it the responsibility of the state to ensure you cut your grass? Are you ever really free if you have a fear of some new regulation popping a lien against your home for the smallest of pittances or nuisances? Are you free when you need a permit to make the most minor of changes or repairs to your home or property? Cities are requiring permits to change hot water heaters, faucets, etc..

I think we need to very carefully examine what we give our collective power of force over to the government for and to what ends. After all, isn't that what the purpose of government is? The collective force of the people? What they do with that force, in our name, is a very dangerous game indeed.

Some cities have ordinances that make it illegal to do mechanical repair on a car in public view. That could mean your own driveway. Enforcement action usually occurs after a neighbor complains. Don't blame the cops if they are reacting to a complaint from a citizen.

A long, long time ago we used to say "it's a free country". People no longer say this. Our constitution has been eviserated. The politicians take away our god given rights under the banner of helping us. "It is for the children" etc. Ben Franklin said; "Any man willing to trade a little freedom for a little safety deserves neither." He was spot on.
