Yes I understand that. But the fleet calculation is done by production numbers.

"A manufacturer’s CAFE is the fleet wide average fuel economy. Separate CAFE calculations are made for up to three potential fleets: domestic passenger cars, imported passenger cars and light trucks. The averaging method used is referred to as a “harmonic mean”. The regulatory language describes the calculation as: “the number of passenger automobiles manufactured by the manufacturer in a model year; divided by the sum of the fractions obtained by dividing the number of passenger automobiles of each model manufactured by the manufacturer in that model year by the fuel economy measured for that model.” The numerical example below illustrates the process. Assume that a hypothetical manufacturer produces four light truck models in 2004, where MPG means miles per gallon and GVWR means gross vehicle weight rating measured in lbs:"

Go to this link http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/cafe/overview.htm and scroll down to -How is a manufacturer’s CAFE determined for a given model year?- and they have a graph and calculation right there.

Given that calculation, chevrolet could manufacture the cobalt, aveo impala and maybe one other of the fleet to get over 30mpg to compensate for the camaro and corvette not getting quite that good of a gas milage and THEN make sure they sold X amount of those vehicles so the standard was met. So yes my friend informed me correctly.

Looks like we will have to buy an extra vehicle to keep those numbers right. I would't mind having a cobalt sport. I rented one in Hawaii and I loved it. But I gotta have my Camaro also!

I hope it doesn't affect the price when she launches.

Supposedly the new CAFE regulations will affect the price of vehicles significantly. $6,000-$10,000 more!
That's like a big from our government! I don't mind paying extra for something that I ask for. I do mind paying for something that I could give a rat's @ss about. I'm with Lutz on this one!

Shouldn't effect prices NOW...but later on is a different story. And (trying not to be too political here) depending on whether the gov't will pay the 'difference' or even part of it will certainly have a big impact.....

That's my take on the whole deal. Sure, regulate - but don't expect it to come free. You can't MAKE technological advancements happen by yelling really loud, you have to pay them to advance.

If the government were to "pay for it" they'd do so by stealing even more money from us than they are already illegally taking.

Yeah I'll agree with that! You know if Hillary gets into office her plans are to UNREALISTICALLY make it 65 MPG. What a moron! No offense to anyone who is voting for her, but she obviously has no idea what that would take. She probably thinks there are tiny oompaloompas under her hood cranking wheels every time she hits her gas! About that few million, yeah... for those who qualify. I'm sure you'd have to have fifteen children with an eight thousand dollar per year income, perfect credit, and live in an efficiency apartment to qualify. More than likely we're screwed. I just hope you're right about it not affecting the prices when the Camaro comes out. That would.

^ well the problem is that even the hybrids don't even get 50mpg (let alone 65) unless you happen to have a really long strait road handy then they pay off very little bit

Regarding CAFE, is it the amount SOLD that has to meet CAFE requirements? Or, is it the total amount produced?

If it's the total amount sold, cut back on production of the gas guzzling trucks they have and raise the price just a teeny weeny bit. Either that, or make them all hybrid. It's the less fuel efficient veh's that are causing the problems. I don't see a problem w/ the Camaro because I honestly think the Camaro will get at or over 30mpg's HWY.

CAFE's not that bad if this is your dream car (100 mpg). But really I can't seem to find it in myself to drive something that is this performance lacking. Cars with 35 mpg standard will definitely kill people who enjoy the power V8s.
