A novel feature of the ZR-1 was the power key which quickly earned the nickname "valet key". There were two modes: "normal" and "power". Power mode featured all 375 hp while the normal status, which worked by disabling the secondary intake ports, limited the output to about 200 hp. The system was set up to reset to normal each time the main ignition was turned off.

...I'm pretty sure the driver of the Boss wouldn't need to change keys.

Not to offend Camaro fans (I love the car too), but we're talking 20 more hp in a car that is much lighter and specifically built for the track.

Since its track only, would think that Ford would make it un handy to drive on the street. Things like no Air conditioning, No radio, no cruse and ect. Unless they get 2 EPA certifications, I'll bet the race mode would not be legal for street use and Ford would not want to be responsible for the fines.

You know what else they could do? It's a genius idea, too:

Put a button in there that says "sport mode", and don't charge for it!

Oh...wait.

That would also make sense. But than anyone driving it could unleash its power. Whereas only the only that hold the magic key can unleash the beast from within!

It's a purpose-built car. No offense to be taken. Camaro does not currently offer a model to compete against a the Boss Mustang.

Until they bring the SSX to life....

Eh, sorta' kinda' but not really. The ZR1 was probably the result of GM wanting to do something like this, but it wasn't anything like this level of 'all encompassing' in terms of what changes. That isn't to disparage the system on the C4 ZR-1, given the tech of the day that was probably close to as much as you could expect outside of maybe a slight suspension change.

In practice the Boss 302's dual key setup sounds a lot more like a slightly simplified version of what the new Ferrari's offer since it appears to change a lot of different parameters and not simply unlock another set of runners.

You seem to be a bit confused about the Boss 302.
The Laguna Seca Boss 302 is a special version and the Boss 302R is the full on race version. The regular Boss 302 with 444 HP and the red key option is a option package based on the 5.0 GT that you can order from any Ford dealer. Although it's rumored that production will be limited to around 5,000 (about the same as the GT500).

I wouldn't hold my breath for the SSX to be produced as a factory car from GM.
I like Camaro's but GM is really dropping the ball right now for Camaro lovers. Heck even though the test mules are around for the Z28 it still has not been officially announced as a production car. I'd love to see these bad boys hit the streets!!! Hopefully soon.

Not a shocker because Camaro doesn't have competition for half the Mustang lineup at tihs point. So because GM has dropped the ball once again we are forced to bring a SS to a fight it has no right being in. No one's fault but GM's dude.

I'm not confused at all at what the Boss Mustang is, but thank you for trying to enlighten me. The SSX is a concept, and I didn't mean the comment about bringing it to life literally (and the tiny font was supposed to indicate a bit of tongue-in-cheek...but that's okay....)

Though it is not beyond imagining that the SSX could be brought to production in the same manner Ford transfigured the race-spec Mustang. All that needs to exist is a market for it.

No ball dropping. The Z28 is coming, and the car has only existed for 1.5 years....It's not nearly as easy to anticipate and develop a car to compete against at-the-time non-existant competitor as we'd all like to think. Give it time, and if they think there's a market for it, they'll produce whatever they need to.

Remember...while we like to put Camaro and Mustang in their own little world against each other...GM has to carry the burden of the Corvette, too. Whereas Ford can focus completely on the Mustang in terms of performance cars.
