I got my 2011's curb weight down to 3,660lbs just by doing a wheel and tire swap.

Other members report that going to a O/R mid pipe drops another 30lbs and add a carbon fiber driveshaft and that should put me in the 3,5xx range. Later on I want to get the Griggs GR40 suspension and that plus light weight brakes should shave another 120lbs and that should bring my 600hp GT500 down to the 3,4xx range.

I knew it was coming, although this does put GM in a tight spot. The reason the 620hp was quoted is because that is ZR1 territory, GM would hate to put a $60k dollar ZL1 Camaro back to back with a $125k ZR1.

If Ford goes with the 305 PS2's, its done-zo, the only thing holding these things back is rubber NOT the suspension. 315's are possible with sway adjustment... 620hp w/ 305's will get you well into the 11's at 3810lb race weight... 11.7@122 Motor Trend time, 12.0 with Car and Driver..

I said from the beginning that Chevy needed to aim for the 600hp mark.

It was widely figured the TVS would be slapped on. Which would easily push the GT500 over the 600hp mark. As they already offer the package to GT500 that gives them 600+hp and full warranty.

The increase in displacement comes as a surprise though.

Why is this thread called ZL1 killer coming 1 year after ZL1 now? Just because Car and Driver eats paint chips doesn't mean we... have to eat.. the chips of paint... that....

I had something for that but damn it, I kicked my beer over... and lost track during the clean up...

The 2012 GT500 started production on the 18th of Jan, 2011. That means the 2013 GT500 will begin production around that time next year and could be push out as far as April. The ZL1 should begin production in Feb 2012, which SHOULD make it a 2013MY. C&D was in a hurry to post the news before MT, there were some obvious details that were overlooked... Such as, boring a Modular engine (durability issues) and a MY13 GT500 being released in Jan 2013 (exactly 24 months after the 2012).

But it is Car and Driver... They should change their name to just "Car" because I have no idea where they got their "Driver" from. Thanks for the story though C&D...

Exclamation ZL1 is heating up it's competition!

http://www.caranddriver.com/news/car...er-future_cars

Check that out. The ZL1 has already caught the attention of Ford.

They can put 10,000hp in the GT500 but until they figure out how to get it to hook up it won't matter.

See more power doesn't alway mean a win.

Agreed. The ones at Ford sure ain't stupid! I honestly think if Ford does indeed pull out a 600hp+ GT500, then the Corvette is going to have to have a major makeover. I would expect for the Corvette to finally go supercar price, while the Camaro takes the place as the affordable sports (pony) car.

Well the Corvette should go supercar price! It is a true super car. It just needs a restyle before they can sell it at those prices. It's design is no were even near real super car styling.

I know the LSA can handle more, but you have to be a lot more careful of knock when it comes to hypereutectic pistons and in a production vehicle the tune will have to be very adaptable. Anyone have any input?

I hope both companies start dropping weight instead of just pumping up the power numbers.
Thought I'd prefer a forged shortblock, I don't think it's GM's problem. I understand many people are going to want to push these cars, like the GT500 and Terminator guys have been for years, but I still don't think that's GM's problem to worry about, per se. I don't know that going that way would necessarily effect ZL1 sales that much, and if it did, I don't think it would matter, too, much. However - seeing the testing LSA has already completed, and being used in marine applications really makes me think LSA doesn't get the credit it deserves. I'm not arguing a forged shortblock isn't the way to go, but I don't think that's going to necessarily going to push the CAMARO-faithful away.

Besides - there comes a point where putting that power to use is going to become a problem.

That's SWEET!!! All that power with that weight loss is turning a bad@$$ car into a MONSTER. KUDOS!!!

HOWEVER - bragging rights account for a lot in the car community I don't know that ZL1 necessarily needs to match the power as long as it can make use of it more effectively. I'd be lying if I said I don't think they should at least match the power though. All it costs is money
