I had the very same problem on my G8 GT when I installed a set of PM-FL axlebacks in place of the stock mufflers. The "drone" was awful at the speeds listed. The solution was the addition of Helmholtz chambers to both pipes. These are tapped into the main pipes out of the exhaust flow and allow the offending frequency to enter and be reflected back 180 degrees out of phase, negating the drone frequency.

This works, and has been adopted commercially by Solo Performance for their G8 systems, as well as for the V6 Camaros.

Sorry, the GM engineers beat you to it. You just reinvented the stock 2010 Camaro V8 Muffler! See cutaway pic below.

Thanks for that pic. I always wondered what the reason for such a large can on these cars. Now we know.

I recall hearing about a sound deadening trunk mat..... Anyone have any idea if this would help?

Sorry, highcompression; that curved pipe has an open end. The Helmholtz end is closed. But at least you're thinking.

If you want to get technical, the housing is completely closed except for a small moisture weep hole. That would make it basically the same, just a different cap placement.

Either way, it's a pretty cool way to fix the drone problem. Makes you realize that there are some pretty smart people out there.

Yep, it's the same principle. The tip of the Helmholtz is contained within the chamber of the muffler on the Camaro and is therefore "closed". It performs EXACTLY the same way. Simple physics really.

To those saying I may not know what drone is...you may be right, maybe I do not. If that is in fact just "exhaust sound" in the cabin, then your right, I should go back to stock. But I have heard others cars....and I do not hear drone. But I do here a nice furocious sound coming from the back. I like that.

THis "drone" doesnt have a distinct direction of origin. It all around you in the cabin.

I test drove a 2010 mustange. Its sounded really nice in cabin. You could here the rumble of the engine even with casual accel. I do not remember the "droning" I hear now.

I just got back from the muffler shop to fix the same problem and there is hope my friend. I have an L99 with JBA LT Headers, High Flow Cats and 3" Cat Back Exhaust. It really sounded narly on the outside, but you could not have a conversation on the inside and at around 1850 or so, the DRONE took over. I put a 3 disk insert in the HPipe right after the Hi Flow Cats and that dropped the drone down a ton. I still have a little, and may add another 2 disk unit at the other end of the H Pipe. They are a small baffle in various diameters depending on your piping size, are adjustable in length and baffeling and tack welded in line. Jegs and Summit both have them on line for about 50 bucks each.

I also heard that the Magnaflow 2 1/2" Street system is pretty good and the most quite of them all.

What comes the closest to the sound of a '69 Z28 with chambered pipes? Corsa?

HushMat is a good product and is easy to install as long as you want it to stay there forever because it really sticks. It is a very good sound abatement product.

Give Tuckers Classic Auto Parts a call at 1-800-544-1955 and ask for Tom, or go to their website at tuckersparts.com.

if it is a daily driver, I can see where it would get problematic(hearing/health-wise). I have Cherry Bombs on my 6, gets plenty loud, but I have a quiet 4 banger for a DD. Worst case, I can always put back the stock ones, though aesthetically an eyesore.:(

No Drone

We have no drone - Wish I could have reached you prior to your purchase -

Granatelli is new to this segment for Camaro but system are nothing to new to us. We have beem manufacturing Exh systems for cars and trucks for over 10 years. Many have forgotten that Granatelli designed and created the now famed 1993-2002 adjustable Borla 14464 Exhaust System for Borla. This is the same system we ran on our 261 mph 1983 Land Speed record car

Here is the 2010 system

Comes with band clamps not the U style pictured

Any thoughts
