Why not just say rwhp

So I park at the store to walk in and this guy walks up he's like I have a 2ss aswell im like that's awesome what color . Anyways after talking for awhile he's like how much HP do you have ... I always go by rwhp cuz that's what really matters I say 368 RWHP . He says oh that's it I have 420 cuz mine is a manual . I tell him that's not his actual horse power to his wheels and he gets mad and argues with me. But what I've noticed is how come muscle car people seem to go by engine HP and not the RWHP ? Just curious

That's the standard. It's what manufacturers advertise, it's what people are used to.

And I don't think it matters one way or the other, personally...as long as you're both using the same reference - the message is conveyed.

....I rarely hear people refer to rwhp unless they're super-car-nuts like around here.

It's a higher number than the rwhp and most don't dyno their car to get the actual rwhp?

People use the flywheel power because it's a known number. Those who have their cars dyno'd know the exact number and use it.

You just answered your own question....

I've got 382 RWHP but if I tell some one that they say "I thought the SS had 400HP?"

Same reason why if you live in Connecticut and you talk to someone in China youre probably better of telling them you live in New York because they will probably know where that is and never heard of Connecticut. Its all relative.

When you talk to the average idiot off the street even if they are interested in cars they probably dont even know that the HP rating is not what the car actually puts to the ground.

I say leave the wheel horsepower talk to people like us who know what that means, it makes a sort of select club and helps you weed out the morons.

Easy fix, figure out what your crank HP is and when someone asks at first say 450, 460....whatever Crank/Engine HP and if he seems like he knows his stuff say your rwhp... I hardly ever say my rear wheel because most people to get it.... And of course rule of thumb for manual Divide by .85 to get your theoretical crank numbers

I get that a lot when they hear my car... "whoa man, sounds awesome, how much horsepower?" My reply is always "well, my last dyno it put down about 415 to the road so almost 500 at the crank." They always understand.

Exactly, I tell everyone my car makes about 500 hp. If they ask "To the wheels?" I know they aren't newbs and I go into detail.

Among friends who into HP we refer to RWHP. To just those who like muscle cars but never visited a dyno I refer to HP @ crank.
