I can see both sides, I worked for 15 years as a union member, earning competative wages and fair benefits that the non bargaining employees of the comapny benefitted from as well. I've spent the last 10 years as the owner of that business and a I now serve as a board member for the employers group that bargains with the unions.
My non-union competitors are charging roughly the same rates to their clients as I do and they pay roughly the same wages but the cost of fringe benfits and the cost of burdensome work rules is where I am put at a competative disadvantage. Collective bargaining still has its place however it has evolved so far into an adverserial or us against them mentality instead of a collaborative or for the common good type of relationship and the unions regidity or unwillingness to reasonably adjust to the times and current market conditions is a detriment to both the employer and employee. A prime example is the defined benefit pension. It is unsustainable in todays economy whereas a 401k and a profit sharing plan which our non bargaining employees have is a fair and manageable benfit. Fair wages, benefits and working conditions benefit the employer as much as the employee, finding common ground is the tricky part |
