Are you guys surprised they're working on a Z/28 option? Originally it was a performance option; RPO Z/28 that you could get on a 1969 Camaro. The "option" made the car certifiable for the Trans-Am racing series so you got a beefed-up 302 cubic inch V8 that was way under-rated on the air cleaner; it said 290 hp if I remember right but they were actually putting out more like 345 hp. Ford was doing the same thing with the Boss 302.

It was a road-racing option which Roger Penske and Mark Donohue put to good use in the Trans-Am series; thus giving the Z/28 option the legendary status it has today.

Except for the fact there's no change in the engine, the 1LE option is basically a Z/28 option. As long as they don't supercharge it but still increase the power of the LS3; that with the 1LE option is essentially a Z/28.

I'd like to see them drop the weight a couple hundred pounds too but give it say 460-470 hp; 19" light-weight wheels and bring it in at about $42k and it would make Mustangs break out in a sweat at road courses from sea to shining sea.

Cost. Price out an LS7 and you'll see why that engine and the LS9 have been left out of the Camaro so far. The LSA is the perfect blue collar engine in the lineup.

LMFAO! All these hard-ons flyin' around here...geez

Everyone must have forgotten that the ZL1 was the Z28 until the name change most likely based on the fact the V8 was supercharged and the performance was to close to a corvette. Unfortunately, though I hate to admit it...I am starting to believe that Jay Leno knows more than the average car guy when he said that the V6 twin-turbo from the SEMA 2009 would be a possible 'Z28' *gasps for air*

I have always known the Z28 to be a V8 so those there were fightin' words in my book. However, I think with gas prices the way they are and performance technology the way its headed that chevy may actually concede to his fancy and make it so. Though I have to admit if any of you have seen his new video on Jay Leno's garage where he finally received that SEMA 2009 V6 Camaro and test drove it...'WOW' is all I can say about it. I prefer they call that a 'RS' or 'Berlinetta' or something and not a 'Z28' but do we really know or are we all just waiting for the BOMB to drop?

THIS I think the Z28 will be a track based car like the SSX & Boss 302 but street legal

Thanks. The goodies you mention adds a bigger, heavier engine which goes against the original Z/28 purpose which actually brought the cubic inches down to 302. In 1969 you could get an SS with a 350 or 396 cubic inch engine so going down to a small-block 302 seemed to go against the grain until you realized the weight/balance advantage and the fact it actually had as much power as the bigger engines.

The Z/28 was a track car built to allow Chevy to compete in the Trans-Am series. It's a shame we don't have the Trans-Am series again; with all the new muscle cars it would be a great series and a great way for the auto companies to show off their cars... oil company sponsorship... tire company sponsorship... all the benefits a series like this has because it runs basically STREET cars that the average fan can identify with, own and drive.

How about a naturally-aspirated, direct-injection, dual-overhead-cam small-block V8 that puts out 450-490 hp and weighs LESS than the LS3 does now?

Get a Z/28 down around 3,600 lbs with that engine, the 1LE track pack, tune it for road racing and that's a car that would proudly live up to the legend of a Z/28. Lobby the SCCA to start a rebirth of the Trans-Am series; get Ford and Dodge to join in on it and you'd have something that would be very popular I think.

This is another entry into the "Camaro history" book. It will be handed down from generation to generation.

Okay, so who is going to be the first to remove the ZL1 badges and put Z28 badges on?
