The heck is this thing?

Was washing my car today, and I've always noticed this, but have never asked.
anyone else got one?

Ignore the dirt, I took care of that.
I added a photo of it cleaned too..

My first answer is the ejection seat. Could also be for the oil slick, smoke screen, or dual machine guns behind the grille.

Don't touch it! Self destruct module left in by the factory! Should have been removed... if starts glowing red, hide in the basement quickly.

It sort of looks like an engine kill switch. Does it unplug?

or is it an accessory switch for lights maybe?

But it's something aftermarket. I'm guessing you bought the car used?

that is a dealer installed ignition disable

it uses a flat electronic key, that has to be inserted in order to start the car. A lot of dealers install them and then charge a premium if you want to keep it ($500 +) or a service fee to bypass it if you don't (usually 1 hour labor)

since the vehicle is working, it is bypassed, they seldom ever remove them, they just jump the wires across to bypass the electronic key.

These were really popular about 15 years ago before the invent of the RFID immobilizer keys, but a lot of dealers still try to sucker people into them.

I know by buddy Jorge got suckered, he has a Camry with push button start and they installed one of those and he paid for it because he didn't know that without the keyfob inside the vehicle the car could not be started.

Just out of curiosity you've had your Camaro for over a year and don't know what it is? This would driven me nuts until I figured it out!

My daughter bought a Geo Metro a long time ago that had one of those in it. The dealer tried to charge her (me) $360.00 for it. I said no and to take it out. They just cut the key off and inserted it into it. I looked them up on line and you could buy one for less than $50.00. Just a dealer rip off.
