Never rely on the computer DIC. Mine was showing 17.8 but when i did the manual computation it only says 16.8mpg, mine is v6. It could be higher or lower. That's why don't believe any people here who got ss then they will say they are getting 22 or 24 mpg city. Unless they drive like a turtle but my car is manual so i can be wrong.

I usually get 14-16, but I've been averaging 12 since I got headers and I can't keep my foot out of the firewall.

Why don't you just walk to work then? Are you using the DIC to tell you? If so, reset it to see your currrent OR when you fill up next time write down how many miles you drove on the tank and divide it by the gallons you just put in the tank to get a more accurate MPG.

The problems is that the heavy car is constantly stopping and then accelerating from a stop. The DIC constantly provides an average. When you're at a stop sign or a light, that's a lot of "zero MPGs" being tossed into the mix. Then when you pull away, even if you granny it, you're getting 4 or 5 mpg for much of the time. The DIC will always go down more quickly than it comes back up. For reference, my 7.5L pushrod V8 with full length headers, 2.5" exhaust, high lift cam, 800 cfm carburetor, blah blah blah...gets 8 mpg around town. Maybe 14 on the highway, if I'm lucky and don't have to slow down and then speed back up. It's like stuffing twentys down the carb. You can watch the gas gauge and the speedo needle demonstrate a property of physics: for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

If you are only driving it that short of a distance, you are stopped more than rolling...the DIC is taking the stopped time (red light, stop sign, warming up, idle at start, idle at parking) in with the tiny amount you are driving. You are right on what you should get with that type of driving.
Example, driving my car to and from work (23 miles each way) I average almost 20 mpg...I was on leave for a week and all I drove it was to take my daughter to the bus stop (she is 12 yrs old and likes to be seen in the Camaro). During that week, I averaged 7 mpg....like stated earlier, take the car for a spin and see what real milage you are getting.

If you had a plug in electric car you could make it 2-3 weeks on a charge.

The main reason is your driving conditions and the short distance to and from work. Winter blend fuels are also in pumps currently and you will see a slight 2-3mpg drop due to this as well.
