Even us "old timers" learn something new.

I'm sure it's probably been talked about ad naseum on here but after seeing another reference to it, I finally got around to researching the uses of and need for a catch can. Talk about eye-opening.

I found an excellent article about the system and will be installing one soonest.

Be careful what you believe reading some of this. If you just vent the crankcase to atmosphere your engine will surely be damaged from water-acid build up. Every gal of fuel you burn dumps about a cup of water past the rings into the crankcase. The constant vacuum the PVC pull on the crankcase pulls this water vapor out before it can mix with the oil and form acids. The catch can is a good idea but no vacuum on the crankcase is a big no no.

I ran a catch can on my previous performance car and it caught oil.
After 1 year of owning this SS I recently added an Elite catch can. I’m always surprised when I check it and discover the oil caught by the can that would have otherwise been ingested back in. Valuable.

I always cringe when I see these beautiful engine compartments and they have an open breather in the clean side PVC return port.

Forgive me for somewhat hijacking the thread for a moment but, maybe someone can enlighten me.
My LS3 is one of the unlucky ones to have the intake baffle not working correctly. With this condition, your intake takes in quite a bit of oil. The work around is to close off the outlet from the baffle and connect the catchcan from the rear valve cover outlet (which is closed off, stock) to the throttle body inlet. Are there any known ill effects with this configuration vs. replacing the baffle?
Thanks

How would I know if my intake baffle is not working correctly as you mention?

Here is a good read on the subject. Excessive oil in catchcan.

Wow - that’s good to know. I had no idea. I’ll watch my can and measure every 1000 miles. Thanks!

Only thing is, it is not always just oil that is in the catch cans...……..Take a sample and send it into black labs and they will tell you exactly what is in it. Because there is also a lot of condensation and other things in there
