Do you always have to pull the Negative Cable installing a CAI?

Do you always have to pull the negative cable when installing the MAF? Is there a live power issue to be careful with?

It's to reset the computer so it can better learn the new airflow. Takes 20 seconds.

Yep, instructions for K&N CAI specifically state to do so and I never pulled a CEL. It's worth your time for preformance gains and lack of CELs.

Is there anything I need to record prior to pulling it? Radio code or any other dash information?

Nope, nothing resets. You may have to re-index the windows (owners manual) and your compass will display CAL, which means just drive around for a few seconds and it'll find the signal again.

You don't have to full the negative cable on the battery. That also won't prevent a CEL from coming on. CEL would come on if it was installed improperly OR the car was adjusting something and would turn off after several minutes or several key cycles.

When we submit our products to CARB (California Air Resources Board) for EO#'s, we have to also submit a copy of the install instructions for each product. They are the ones who want us to start each instruction sheet with 'disconnect the neg. battery cable.' For some installs, such as headers, it's a no-brainer, the battery should be disconnected since your working close to, or removing the starter. For other installs it's pretty redundant.

I might be remembering incorrect but the Airaid instructions were to disconnect the positive cable, not the negative. Or am I losing it?

Just guessing here. If you pull the negative, you have no worries about completing a circuit to ground when the cable hits something. With a positive cable touching the grounded body, the battery would discharge.
EDIT: Pulling the cable also would prevent the fan from coming on with cars equipped with electric fans.

Installed my CAI from Cold Air Induction myself. Didn't pull the cable and I had no problems. No CEL
