They have had ethanol in gas is Cali for so long it is ashame. The alcohol is added for emmissions. The push for alcohol is because it reduces the need for fossil fuel and it burns real clean. I have had an experience with E85, which is 85% alcohol. It doesn't create smoke even when burned in bulk. Alcohol fuel is about $5 a gallon. It burns hot, but does not produce the horsepower that gas does.

As for lawnmowers, I know you can take a lawnmower engine, drill out the carburator, and run alcohol fuel. This will double the horse power of the engine. They do it with go-cart racing all the time.

Ethanol actually has potential to make MORE hp than gas, it's essentially racing fuel with 104 Octane or so.....the Corvette racing team even uses E85 in their cars...

...the problem right now is that engines are not optimized for the stuff. Mostly because it's not not nearly as available as gas...if they were, this conversation wouldn't be happening, I bet.

10% really shouldn't make a noticeable difference though. They've been designing engines and computer systems since '85 to deal with the stuff. The biggest change would be a drop in fuel economy....I'm talking 1 solid mpg...MAYBE 2.

Not sure about hotter, but it does gum up thier fuel systems.
Fact ethonal attracts moisture. When it breaks down it forms a gel gunk.
The little needle holes in the carbs are stopped up with the gel, starved for fuel, they won't run and have to be cleaned.
You have to remember that fuel in mowers, trimmers and such tends to be more exposed to the elements, so it breaks down faster.

The upside of E85 is 101 to 104 octane rating, cleanburning, keeps injectors and fuel system clean. Higher octane means more spark advance and cooler fuel/air charge in cylinders combining to give more HP. Not meant for older cars/mowers with steel fuel tanks, rubber hoses, etc. Our cars have poly plastic fuel tanks, fuel pumps, plastic evap lines, etc as they are not affected by use of etanol. E85 is not as caustic as is methanol. Also the price per gallon is somewhat less than gasolene (10-15%). The downside is approx 30% less mileage. E85 has 15% fuel added to aide in very cold climates with cold start issues. Also availability limited in many parts of the USA. Fillups more frequent. Requires an entirely different tune in our ECM's. Lastly the fuel delivery system plus injectors need upgrading in order to handle added volume of E85 over gasolene. Just my 2 cents. Could be a good thing but not in a daily driver.

MPG, yes; HP/Tq, I don't know for certain. I've been running a long series of experiments on V6 MPG vs. octane, and until I got some 87oct results, I was feeling really good about 93. My current, albeit incomplete results are: 87oct => ~17.58mpg, 89oct => ~17.42mpg, 93oct => ~18.36mpg (all with 10% ethanol; this is my daily-driver, and my commutes are very consistent, so my percentage-wise results are fairly accurate).

A couple of points: 1. Since 93oct is ~4.4% gain in mpg over 87oct, but 93oct costs ~11% more than 87, the "cheapest" gas is clearly 87oct. 2. Several forumites have noticed that the V6 retards alot more timing with 87oct versus 93oct--suggests more power with 93 oct.

Also note our cars are NOT E-85 compatible. Ethanol is a corrosive, hygroscopic boondoggle thrust upon us by mindless twits, whose pockets are lined by corn growers...growers that cannot even remotely produce enough corn to handle both food and fuel demands. Ethanol is much more expensive to produce than straight gasoline.
