Why?

The removal of these obstacles allows us to use smaller diameter rims. I have spent weeks researching if, how, and who has the answer? I heard rumors of people cutting the mickey mouse ears off but no one responded. So, here is the proof people! Let it be known that you can cut the roller skate wheels off. I have not heard a peep or squeak out of my brakes after modifying them. Understand this, I have over five thousand miles on my 2011 1SS so these pads have some wear. Individual results may differ.

I'll post pics of my new Tirerack snow wheels when the time comes to mount them.

1lb x 100 maybe. better off going on a diet, rather than taking a dremel and BBQ paint to your calibers...maybe just my personal opinion, but I don't have those on my calipers anyway.

As for all the responses to "why"...well they look effing stupid. Thats reason enough for me. But I probably would of been faster to just undo the calipers and cut off the roller skates. IMO.

folks - the skates are there to help prevent/stop brake noise... take a look at the EBC high performance brakes for our cars - no skates.

Another reason they are there (I suspect) is to dissapate heat. When a brake pad gets hot it transfers the extra heat to the metal in the skate. Kind of acts like a ground wire or emergency run-off for heat. The bigger the pad the more evenly the heat can be spread around the pad. Those skates (while outside the caliper) will absorb heat from the pad contained within the housing.

But...you can get better pads, and unless you are running hot on a track...might not be of a lot of use.

I'm like a scientist this week....

My understanding is the roller skates are only for reducing brake squeal.

You can cut them off. There have been a few threads on this. I was thinking of waiting until my original tires wear out and then replacing the pads with something like the Hawk pads, maybe ceramics. Then install winter tires on the original wheels. Finally buy a set of lightweight 19s with summer tires. They will fit once the skates are gone.

Neat mod, and I'm impressed with your attention to detail with the tape/paint.

I've only got a small request for you and anyone who does this (or pops those caliper weights off): Don't complain about squeals and noises if/when it occurs. They didn't stick those ugly suckers on there because they wanted to....
