GM unveils new direct-injection 2.4L EcoTec and 3.0L V6

Well, that was short lived. Ford just finished bringing its more powerful and efficient four- and six-cylinder engines to market in the Escape CUV, but the Dearborn CUV is going to have to kiss its crossover efficiency crown goodbye when the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox drops. Redone for '10, the new Equinox will offer direct-injection engines that deliver greater power and fuel economy improvements of their own, enough to push Ford's new powerplants out of the top spot.

This evening GM has unveiled a 2.4-liter direct injection EcoTec four-cylinder that will kick out 180 horsepower while returning a projected EPA highway rating of 30 mpg (Ford's 2.5L I-4 produces 170 hp and returns a maximum of 28 mpg highway). It's a marvelous way to send the old 3.4 liter V6 into the sunset, but if you absolutely must have a V6, there's also a DI 3.0-liter version of GM's excellent "high feature" V6 delivering an impressive 255 horsepower (Again, Ford's heavily revised 3.0L V6 produces 240 hp).

Both engines have been developed with an eye (or ear) toward reducing the typically increased noise of DI engines. There are rubber isolators to keep the fuel rail racket down and attention to noise attenuation was an important aspect of the program. Variable valve timing also allows both engines to be more efficient over a broader rpm range. Backing both powerplants is a six-speed automatic transmission. Now all the General has to do is hang on 'till these cars hit showrooms and pray for higher fuel prices to further drive demand.

Holy cow that's AWESOME! 2.4L making 180 hp and getting 30 mpg in a small/midsize CUV? Fantastic! The 3.0L also sounds promising. Really, no FWD family sedan needs more than 250 hp.

Great news. Too bad it's coming at such a crappy economic time.

Good job, GM.

These are terrific new engines, and while I'm not willing to "pray for higher fuel prices to further drive demand" - Any thinking person knows gas prices will go back up as the economy goes back up.

IF the V6 in this vehicle delivers 27-28mpg...it should return 29-30 in a Camaro. Which would be the magic number...

And it would still be able to outrun the V6 Mustangs and Challengers
I hope GM really considers this in the future. First pony car to get to 30mpg is likely the one that will outlive the others

Hmmm...makes you wonder what they have up there sleeve for a V8? 500 HP with 25-27 MPG highway? Maybe wishful thinking, but hey, it might be worth the wait. Hopefully they can get out of this mess and make it happen!

HP of the 2.4L would increase by about 7, and mileage rating increase of about 2 MPG. Compared to the motor in my HHR. Although my HHR was rated at 28MPG Highway, I always get 31-32MPG, based on that the DI rated at 30, should get 33-35MPG...

They have DI Gen.V V8's in pre-production now. Slated to arrive in a couple of years.

I'd also like to point out that this is a HUGE bump in fuel economy. The Current 3.4L V6 in the Equinox is rated at about the same 185hp, and 24 mpg...that's a 6 mpg increase by swapping out for a similar-power DI 4-cylinder.

The LS3 is a Gen IV V8. So it applies to LS V8's.
