Which one of all DUAL DIN mods is the best?

So I have a Camaro 2012 with the original radio and now I want to install a touch screen and run a custom linux distribution in my car. The thing is I need to convert it to a dual DIN installation first.

Question is, which one should I choose from all the different ones?

To be honest, I do not think that any of them looks very quality-ish. So I need your advice to choose the one that has the best quality and that provides all functions.

These are the ones that I've found myself so far:

1. Metra Kit
2. Scosche Kit

Any inputs or reviews would be appreciated!

Keep the stock head unit. Both look cheap as hell.

That has been my view on it so far too... But I would really like to have my Debian running in my car with all my stuff in it to feel like home
And then the stock is not an option anylonger.

Could you develop that further? What are your own experiences regarding the both?

i guess they both have there downfalls, i think the look of the schosce is too big and it kinda covers the gauges(if you have them). i have never had the schocse kit but i think the metra kit just looks and flows better with the car.

I want the Scosche Kit, however this thread discussing some of it's problems scares me.

Seems like neither Scosche or Metra is anything to have... They seem to have too much of issues. Very odd that nothing of quality exists... I guess I will have to wait for a while or figure out something myself.

For what it's worth, I've had my scosche kit for a year and a half now with no issues what so ever.

both have issues. just depends on the issue your willing to deal with. some people say with metra kit it doesnt work good with stereo controls, i have no stereo controls so i dont care, or you just use the volume on your dash. just all depends

I think that manufacturers of these things have determined a price point that they think people will pay and at that price point, high quality isn't possible.

My only hope for something of decent quality that looks like it belongs in the car is a retrofit of MyLink, which only one person that I know of (2SS on this forum) is working on. Otherwise, for now, I'm stuck with the Metra kit.

My Metra kit has been working well for 18 months now EXCEPT for the backlight, which has a mind of it's own. Most of the time, it changes to an awful looking orange color. Other times, it's the correct color that I set it to. And other times, it flickers like it's going to go out completely, which is what has happened to most people who have owned it. I purchased my Metra kit from Amazon. When the backlight started going nutz, I contacted Amazon. They told me to deal with the manufacturer for warranty claims. I then contacted Metra, who promptly told me that I have to deal with Amazon for all warranty claims. I gave up trying to force the hand of either party and am just living with it now (out of warranty) until I can put something better in the car.
