Reverse Concern in 6-Speed Manual 2SS

One of my concerns while driving is that while the transmission offers an extra gear, I find myself worried that while driving, I might accidentally throw the shifter into reverse while driving. There is no security lifter ring like my Cobalt SS has, but I know there are safeguards built-in somehow. Does the Reverse gear position only make itself available from a complete stop or my other theory is, does the 5th gear position double as the Reverse gear position when at a complete stop? I know the car is safe regardless, but I felt the need to ask anyway. Thanks all!

There is a positive reverse lock out while the wheels are turning. At least there was in 2007 Vette. Can you force it? I don't think so, but I don't purport to be an expert.

I managed to throw my 2000 SS into reverse, there was a gawdawful griding sound but I got of the revs and back inot a fwd gear. I don't think I could have actually got it into R gear. There was never any damage. I had the gearbox in for a recall and the tech said it was in "pristine" condition. I heard the 010 has a lockout, and besides you have to really go hard over and up to find R gear !

The 4th Gen cars have a reverse lockout solenoid that prevents the car from being accidentally shifted into reverse while in motion.
I had mine go south on me at one point, and yes, there is an awful grinding noise under those circumstances if you find the wrong gate by mistake!

Best regardSS,

Elie

not possible. the car wont let you unless you REALLY try. The C6 is the same way, in 2+ years, never had an issue.

I always thought my brother's shifter in his G35 was interesting. He had to push the shifter down and over in order to shift into reverse. Am I right in assuming that the Camaro's shifter slots are all on one plane (so no pressing down necessary)?

When I drove mine off the dealers lot and tried to go to 5th, I accidentally tried to put it in reverse and I heard a click. I knew what that click was and even though I did not fully put it in revese, it could not have been good for the tranny.

It is different being "up" but I'd have to imagine that it won't let you do it while you're driving (at least not easily). With all of the other stuff they thought of when designing this car, I'd be willing to bet that this was on the list

I've driven foreign, domestic, and european spec. manual trans. vehicles and never once threw it in reverse while driving I really don't think you can it would take alot for it to happen. If your concern about it maybe you shouldn't have a 6 speed car. Just my two cents

you cannot go into reverse unless the car is stopped. i let the car roll to a stop with the shifter in neutral pressing to the right, it did not let it go all the way over until the car was stopped.

I posted about this last week- I was rolling forward at 1-2mph (hadn't come to complete stop) and tried to hit reverse and it forced me into 5th instead. So 5th and reverse are two completely different gears and you can't hit reverse while rolling forward. I haven't tried violently shoving it towards reverse while driving, but under normal circumstances it shouldn't be an issue.
