I wish they would, but they won't call it a ZL1 because SLP is already selling them. As other have already said.

I think they'll end up calling it Z/28 because there's nothing else in the moniker bin.

Looks like we will be getting a new nameplate folks...And the Z/28 will remain true to its heritage lighter & taking on the Boss.
The writer in the article you hyperlinked is merely making speculation and offering his opnion, no different than we do all day long here...

If Gm decided to make their own ZL1, they would just buy the name rights back from SLP. This is not the issue. Saying GM can't use ZL1 because of an aftermarket company owning the name is silly...

I still think this one will be a Z28. Calling it something else until it is released is a brilliant way for GM to generate a buzz.

Here's something interesting....

I did some digging...and it turns out SLP Performance Parts has the rights to the "ZL" name as of 2006...but not the full "ZL1" designation...if you look above at the photo above, they have the small registered trademark (R) symbol above the 'ZL' and not the full 'ZL1'.

.....hmmmmm.....

Personally I think they need to start with a new Z/ Name for this car. That would keep the Z/28 to compete with the boss and this new Z/ to compete w/ the GT500.

"silly" huh....we'll see...

While this all is just pure speculation, when and if this Camaro arrives, I'll bet you it won't be called "ZL" anything.

If they had to call it something other than Z28, I can see them calling it a Camaro ZR1. It fits with the Corvette name structure, and the performance would justify calling it such a high-performance name. I also can't imagine making a faster OEM Camaro, so this would be a fair ceiling for GM to place on Camaros for a while.

I tend to agree that if it's not Z28 then it will be something new. Like ZL2/3/4/5/6/7 or ZR2/3/4/5/6/7 or Z____ whatever,

It will have a Z in the beginning thats all I'm saying. This car will be the ZR1 of the Camaro so a new name suggesting something on a totally new level (Corvette=ZR1; Camaro=Z__) would fit...

Whatever it ends up being called, if it comes to exist, sure makes for some interesting and entertaining discussion.
