anybody heard about restrictions on tuning?

I work in a Ford dealer and we recently sold a new 5.0 mustang. this week it got towed in for a no start and upon examination we found the customer had installed a cold air intake, after getting into the pcm we found it was blown up so my manager called the customer whos father is a good friend and told him to come clean. he said someone tuned it for him and shortly after it started to throw codes and act funny so he tried to shoot the original tune back in and it died. we had to replace the pcm and when my manager spoke to ford he was told that there are alot more restrictions on the 2010 and newer cars and included the camaro when he said that you cant retune or untune it without the pcm locking up.
is there any truth to this???

Definately not on the GMs or Chryslers, and as far as I know the Fords are no Problem when using SCT.

May have been an aftermarket software crash.

Ted.

Any tuning software could fry a computer but most of the time it's the usser's fault.

Haven't had any issues - many tunes, retune, back to stock, retune...

only issue was the cable got tweaked and caused a bus error - car would not start, but did not fry anything...

The computer systems have advanced...but I've never heard of one locking up...I know they'll record a tuning change...but not freeze.

Good for Ford! Maybe the "victim" needs to go back to their tuner for reimbursement.

We have yet to kill a new E38 or E68 ECM they are pretty robust units.
