New York Emission standards

in the coming years (once i leave the military) i plan on moving to Rochester to go to RIT. i have been wanting to buy long tube headers but i don't want to get in trouble with emissions. While i was at camarofest someone told me as long as you don't get a check engine light you will pass emissions is this true?

The "emissions" test in New York is a simple matter of scanning the computer for any trouble codes. There is no sniffer, no smog test...nada. Visual Inspection (which consists of looking at brakes, lights, tires, etc) and the "emissions" test...which is nothing more than a computer scan.

Once a year, every year.

not sure if that's true in ALL counties...In westchester, they do have a sniffer test (or at least did when I lived there a few years back). But still, to answer the OP...if you have cats and no CEL, you'll be fine.

Mine's in the trunk. There is a bill proposing no front plate but not yet on the floor for vote. They can't even pass a budget, so the plate thing might be awhile
