Dragoneye: the LS2 that is coming out in the G8 isn't going to be out there for long, they are going to supersede that engine with the new LS3 ASAP. The older V-8's are long in the tooth and they will need to be updated soon after the car is released... Plus the Camaro needs more engine in it than the G8 to be competative in its segment. Since the Camaro is going up against the Mustang GT, and it will be heavier than the Mustang GT, it had betteer have a LOT more horesepower to compensate! I don't think 62hp more is going to cut it by 2009. The Mustange will probably have 350hp by then, so the Camaro will need something like 425-450 just to compete... IMHO. Oh, and 600hp? Yes please! Why? Why does anyone drive something more than a 1984 Ford Fiesta? Cause we want to... that's pretty much all there is to it. Can you use it? MAYBE on the strip, but even then you'd better have drag slicks on and REALLY know what your doing. So probably not. But then again, SOOO many people are driving Ferrari's, Lamborgini's, Bugatti's etc... that the power is sort of a moot point. It only takes about 80hp to go 80mph so why would you ever need more? Cause its fun. Its just cause you want it, and like it. Oh, and 600hp makes REALLY nice parrallel black stripes wherever you would like them! Personally I think the Camaro SS with 600+hp would be one of the great collector cars of our time, and I would love to hold on to it as a part of the family... but that is a secondary reason for wanting one. ~LSx |

LSx...you know, I thought that right after I wrote the post. I know, I probably should have checked my facts before shooting my mouth off....okay, you got me...but the point remains the same.
Dragon...as for a V-6 putting out those numbers....I don't think it's too far-fetched...I mean, take that 300HP V-6 they are putting out now, give it 1 to 1.5 years for more development/upgrade and it's possible. Not to mention that you could probably take that same engine, flash it with a power programmer, change the exhaust, or the intake, and you could add 20-30 HP very quickly. |

Which vehicle is running the 300hp V6? What is the displacement? I'm curious.
300hp for a V6 is great. The 3.5L V6 in the Nissan 350Z and G35 puts down 300hp, and that was about the absolute max they could get out of it. The 2008 G37 is a 3.7L V6 engine that puts down 330hp and 270ft-lbs of torque all motor. But that particular line of V6 engines from Nissan is very advanced and has won awards for their efficiency. All that said a high performance V6 engine might break the 300hp mark...and it would actually tie neatly into what I posted on the thread about actual prices for the 5th gen.

Rock, you're right, that would tie in neatly with your other post....
A HO V6 putting out that kind of HP would let it compete with the low end V8 in the Stangs while getting better MPG and selling for less..... Very interesting to think about. |

Excellent power-to-weight ratio of 9.3lbs. per horsepower. 0-60 in 4.6 seconds with automatic transmission. 0-60 in 4.8 seconds manual transmission. Wouldn't we see something similar in the 'maro that gets the LS2? Just askin'

LS2 is dead. It just is. I knew that.
What I didn't know was that the G8 had an LS2 in it. 2008? I thought they were killing it? The only thing I'm worried about as far as engine power - is price. Stay Competitive - sure - but not at the expense of price, you know? If advancement in engine technology comes with more hp standard for the same price(which it DOES!) then more power to them. I don't care. 450, 80000, it really doesn't matter. But you can't take those numbers and factor in "LS3 = expensive" and try and price the Camaro accordingly. i think what a lot of people are missing when they cough up prices is that 'competitive with the Mustang' (which it always has been) is more than just hp, you need price, too Last edited by Mr. Wyndham; 06-14-2007 at 06:33 PM. |

So the Direct-Injection 3.6L V-6 in the 2008 Cadillac CTS has 300hp and 270lbft. That's pretty darn stout no matter who you ask!
And, since it is shared with the Caddies, it will probably be well-sorted out by the time the Camaro comes out. Sounds like a nice option for the V-6 crowd out there! ~LSx |

I thought I read somewhere (like an MT or RT article) that GM was saying it would be a high-feature 3.9L V-6....the past Camaros used the old 3.8L V-6 and when the new one's came out they were going to use a slightly larger but much more refined, powerful, and efficient engine than the previous Camaros.
At least that's what I think I read....I may be wrong....I'll try to look and see if I can find that article. |

I don't know how much hp the V6 will have. But, I've been told that GM can and most likely will put out 2 V6's in this Camaro...a base V6 and a high performance V6 putting out "just as much hp as your 2002 Camaro SS." and..."this would save a lot of money on car insurance." That is exactly what was said to me. I would bet cold, hard cash that the hi-po V6 will have over 300hp. I'd say in the area of 320hp. Which V6 will this be? I haven't a clue. But, if I recall correctly, 3Whiterag was saying something about GM coming out with a few new engines in the near future. It's possible...very possible.

Well, the Cadillac CTS has TWO V6 Options:
The Direct Injection V6 3.6L = 300hp The 'Regular' V6 3.6L = 255hp The 'Secretary' V6 2.8L = 210hp My guess is that the upper two is what we will see (with a couple of years of evolution, so probably add 30hp to each... A 330hp V6 in a Camaro? Not bad... especially if its a LOT cheaper! ~LSx |

Yeah! That's promising. Think about it, who else can compete V6 to V6 at 300+ hp? not Ford, not Dodge - and definitly not the little 4 bangers out there!
A 300+ hp V6 is an excellent choice for GM if they want to produce mass quantitys of these things. |

Yeah, I'd agree... its looking like a pretty stout engine lineup:
Starting at the 'bottom': Regular 3.6L V6 @ 255hp Direct Injection 3.6L V6 @ 300hp Then the V8's... 6.2L LS3 @ 430hp Supercharged 6.2L LS9 (LS3 Block?)) @ 600hp |

I gotta admit...my naughty place won't tingle knowing that the nuetered Camaro will be able to keep up OR BEAT the 4th gen SS...that's....blasphemous.
But good at the same time. Really mixed emotions here! |
