Anyone that says that you are wasting your money putting anything higher than 87 in the tank has never driven this car with premium in it. Sure you can put 87 in it, but it runs better with the higher octane fuel.

Yeah, I always used 87 and was skeptical that anything higher would be a waste. But I tried 89 a month ago and haven't looked back. Engine runs noticeably smoother especially under WOT. Haven't tried a tank of 91 yet.

I am sooooo confused now! So since I clearly have way too much money, I will continue to use premium, although if I can find higher than 89 octane mid, I will give that a shot.

I am in the middle of a fairly quantitative, scientific test of gas grade versus mpg. Have not yet tested 87, only 89 and some 93. Preliminary results suggest 93 gets ~1mpg higher than 89 (and is more consistent). Based on the numbers so far, 93 would be cheaper in the long run, by a very, very small amount (only 1 data point, was << $0.01 per mile). Still have several weeks of data to go...

With 93, the engine felt smoother and stronger, especially at high RPM.

I definately like where this thread is going. I asked the question a month ago and was told I was just wasting money, so I switched to regular. I think I'll try mid-grade for a while,

FROM What I read on a thread before was that midgrade was just a mix of both low and high grade so you dont really know what your getting just go w supreme

I decided to try 89 octane last time I filled up...
I usually run 93 because I really felt the difference between the 93 and the 87.
So far the 89 has been driving great. It still seems to have that power down low where the 87 did not. I don't have any gizmo's to check the knock retard like scrming did, but so far I'm happy with the 89. I might stay with the mid grade...

Generally speaking, a higher octane will not harm a motor but you won’t be getting the best performance out of it.

Go with what the manual says. The car was design for that specific rating.

You can, and will, lose performance when you start putting in a higher octane then what the car was designed for. How? Well basically it works like this. The higher octane will result in more power per combustion. However, the higher octane takes longer to burn when means you will have less combustions per minute then with lower octane, so the resulting overall power per minute will decrease.

So yes, you may result is more power from the higher octane but the over all power will be less, which will actually make you run slower.
