the better question is why would you install ported heads with no cam install?
they will yield you very very minimal results on a stocker cam |

LS3 conversion, the lifters in the L99 are only good for one thing, unique paper weights.

If you won a set of nice ported heads, why not just wait till you have the $$ to do it right. That means put the good hardware and a good cam in it. No since in wasting $$ taking everything apart for just a set of ported heads with stock hardware and cam.

I agree about the lifters although they have nothing to do with whether you can use a VVT cam or not.

Unless you're using boost, then you don't want VVT, too much hassle.

Shouldn't be too hard to find that out. Look at the vendors heads and see what hardware they're using. Then start researching prices. You can also search this section to see what others are using. Since you're not in a hurry, keep an eye out in the forsale sections to see if you can grab some parts at a discounted price.

Sorry a boosted application would benefit in the same way a N/A application does. When you use a cam like the VVT-3 you have to do a AFM delete. Think of it as a "LS3 conversion" with VVT. The only difference between my set up and a "LS3 Conversion" is the cam phaser that gives you the ability to adjust the cam timing on the fly no hassle there just win in my opinion.

Once you decide on a cam lots of people on here can point you in the right direction or talk to one of the vendors on here. Are the heads assembled or bare? If assembled find out what springs they installed.

In import, where VVT has been around much longer, high boost applications almost always delete VVT. The main reason? You can run much more aggressive cam profiles without it, which will make more power and work better with boost. And generally high hp means high boost, therefore VVT and boost are not the preferred setup. There isn't a single VVT car on the fast list, facts talk.

Instead of this:Unless you're using boost, then you don't want VVT, too much hassle. Maybe some thing like this would be more appropriate: If you are building a max effort, high boost, huge cam, stroker engine a VVT cam may not be your best choice. Then I would have responded with some thing like: Listen to 2SS45th he knows what he is talking about get the hell away from that VVT cam.
