Question about dealer tuning...

I noticed when reading the release from GM about them voiding the car's warranty if the car shows it has been flashed with a non-GM tune and throughout the notice it restates "Non-GM" several times...my question is that all I want is to remove my stupid annoying and useless AFM (reason I say useless is that I had it on my last 08' Sierra and got a tune to remove AFM and actually gained MPG from it and because I really only do city driving my style of driving doesn't utilize any MPG gains from it). So can GM remove it for me and call it a "GM tune" and me still be covered safely under my warranty? I know it can be done outside GM and that even GM themselves COULD do it if they wanted to but my real question is will they??

no... gm/dealers can not alter the tune....

you'd need to get an aftermarket tune like you did for your truck...

Well I know they CAN alter the tune (I have to keep my source of that unknown as he's asked me to) but he said that not all dealers can do it for you and outsource their tuning to private tuners. I'm not asking for a full tune and upping the pressure in my lines and changing shift points etc I'm just looking to shut off my AFM.

If they outsource it, it's not a GM tune. Hate to break it to you, but whoever is telling you this is full of shit, plain and simple. If you pop your engine with a tune that a dealer outsourced, GM is still going to tell you to pound sand. Dealerships are NOT part of GM.

The only thing that could possibly fly is a GMPP calibration, which would have to show up in your service record.

Your question has been asked a million times... I've heard of no dealers who have done this. Get with 06Monte and he can hook you up with a good tune and no AFM.

...and I do guarantee you will lose MPG... but who cares

Mike, did you lose MPG with AFM active in just 5th and 6th gear as oppossed to active all the time?

I have a Silverado I turned the AFM off on, the mileage difference was next to not noticeable.

Whoever told you a dealer could do it with GM equipment was wrong. A dealer only has the ability to install the factory cal or if a revised factory cal is released.... but none of those will ever have the AFM turned off. If a dealer did do that, they were using an aftermarket tuning device - which a lot do.

LOL... I never paid quite that much attention. I was turning it all off or all on with the Diablo during long drives... approx 100 miles each way. Lost around 3 MPG when turned off.

I didn't have the 5th and 6th gear only setup very long before I switched cars. Now it's back to Diablo and it's all off.

BTW my Diablo is for sale as I will be going to a dyno tune again soon. They keep dragging their feet on the transmission support.

Well I actually checked back with the guy who I spoke with and he said that yes GM was doing the tunes on the vehicles however my information was received wrong on my behalf because the GM techs that were doing the tunes were using handheld tuners (i.e. Diablo, Superchips, etc) that they sold to the customer for use with items they installed such as intakes and headers. So apparently what I want to do with mine as far as just getting the AFM turned off is an already lost battle on my behalf. Kind of hits a nerve with me on that respect because even if I got a handheld just to turn off the AFM or went to my tuner here in town I'd instantly kiss my warranty bye bye even though I didn't change any of the parameters that function how the car runs.

I'd have to imagine there's a fuse or something that you can pull to disable AFM.

It's funny you mentioned that because I asked my tuner the same thing that if there was just a fuse and he said to his knowledge there isn't and shouldn't be one that it should have to be tuned to shut off but that he's still familiarizing himself with the cars a bit and would let me know if he found anything.

Nope... it's programed in the ECM... A handheld will quickly do the trick.
