Value when carfax says there is an accident?

Last Sunday I posted about an accident someone caused me. I was talking to a buddy of mine and he said that basically this should now be reported to carfax from the insurance company. He always was encouraging me try get more money from them because now my car is worth less then if it wasn't in an accident. Which is what I was thinking of doing.

So I am wondering, does anyone know how much value hit I could take if I were to trade my car in or sell it if someone runs a carfax and see I was in an accident? I'm trying to figure out an average price hit. I probably will go to the dealer tomorrow and see how much less they would pay.

Make sure you takes lots of pics of the damage so the next buyer won't be too freaked out by the "Accident Reported" on the CarFax. What scares buyers (and thus lowering the price) is that they don't know how bad the accident was. The pics will show its not that bad (assuming, of course that the damage actually wasn't that bad)

I figure I would, plus keep the papers of the actual work done. So far it just looks like body damage and the head lamp. Frame and everything else appear to be straight but I really won't know unless it gets pulled apart. I may even had a frame shop laser it up and make sure it's all straight.

When I traded my old car for the Camaro the carfax did show it was in an accident which also showed theat it was minor didn not affect my trade in value at all the dealer said carfax classifies the accidents as minor, major, and serious the serious ones are when the airbags deploy major ones are more than 5k damages no airbags minor are less than 5k with no airbag deployment so you should be ok if it was just a fender bender

theres no set number to depreciate a vehicle for crashes. Ive traded in vehicle to dealers and havent said a word about it, Im not going to lie but if they dont ask im not telling them and I figure they are doing the same thing to me so its even. Now sure if you have a crash you probably are going to have a drop in price but not much.

No cash problem but I don't like the idea that potentially that the value of the car is less. I'm not planning on selling it, ever, but who knows what I will be thinking a year or longer from now. Plus I feel that if the car is now going to be valued at less that I should be compensated for it. The accident wasn't my fault, I should no have to take any type of loss. Even the time I have sent over this I feel I should be compensated for too.

Actually I think a dealer won't run a carfax if they don't see anything noticable but a private party may if I went that route, if I were to ever sell it.

I don't think you'd get anything there.

Values of any given vehicle are not guaranteed.

Why bury the insurance company with useless paperwork. This is why our rates are high enough,

dude your thinking way into this. It has a crash nothing your going to do about it and you will get what you get out of the car when you go to get rid of it. I mean this car shouldnt be an investment anyways and look how many people have crashed their cars on here. Just move on and live life.

I'm looking at trading in my '10 1lt for a '11 1SS. I had about $3.5k worth of rear end/exhaust damage repaired on my vehicle. On Monday I will know how much at least one dealer is willing to give me for my 1lt. Depending on what numbers I start seeing back and because my accident was recent enough, the thought had crossed my mind to pursue a diminished value claim with the other party's insurance. Why in the world should I get less money for my vehicle because some asshat decided not to pay attention and rear end me?

My insurance rates are plenty low. But I pay attention when I drive, have never been so much as pulled over, and never had an at-fault accident.

I'll post again when I have offers in hand.

i just did my diminished value on my car and got 4500.00
in some states it a law that insurance companys have to pay the diminished value. not a waste of paper work.

i agree with you, but at the same time why should somebody pay top dollar for something thats been crashed.


To be honest with you as the car gets older crashes really play less and less into the value of a vehicle, sure you can be that car that somebody puts up for sale saying its never been nicked, but they are the same people that never drove it or have kids. I mean who hasnt a had a car that need something worked out on it.
