Changing the clutch fluid

Is it difficult to do it yourself? I've got 8k miles on my car, I'm putting Ina short shifter in a few days and I thought it might be a good idea to replace the clutch fluid. This is my first manual transmission car

Yeah, its difficult to access the bleeder (its on the slave cylinder). Most people just replace the fluid in the reservoir, but a lot of the old stuff stays in the line between master and slave.

If you ever drop the transmission, you should install a remote bleeder (a 4-5 foot braided line with bleeder at the end). Then its easy to flush out the old fluid.

Messing with the slave cylinders or the transmission components is not something I'll mess with. The reservoir is the brake fluid you're talking about right? I read somewhere that they are shared, but someone said if your clutch fluid is dirty or have air bubbles in it, that you can feel it in your shifts. A bit confused by this

If the clutch design is similar to the Corvette, you can replace the reservoir fluid, pump the clutch until you see the reservoir fluid turn dark, and replace the fluid again.. repeat the process until the fluid stays clear.
The clutch fluid does circulate enough to refresh it from the reservoir, unlike brake fluid.

If the clutch fluid is dark, it is probably from picking up clutch dust at the slave cylinder, mainly during high rpm shifts where clutch dust fills the clutch housing.

If you change out the master cylinder/clutch reservoir then you shouldn't have a problem.... like every 2-4K.. its very easy to do if you have a turkey baster and good fluid like ATE Super Blue.

But a Remote Bleeder would be the best option..

Hmmmm can someone post a pic of the clutch reservoir or describe where it's at?

The clutch and brake share the same reservoir.

Changing the fluid in the reservoir won't help, all of the effected fluid in the system is below the reservoir in the line and slave cylinder. You need to bleed the fluid from the slave which is a major pain. A remote bleeder is the answer, you can see my solution in this thread:

I noticed several forum members are installing a separate clutch fluid reservoir like on the Corvettes.
That way, at least the clutch fluid will not also contaminate the brake fluid.
Bleeding the system is the best, but since the clutch fluid circulates itself, unlike brake fluid, you can actually clean the fluid up by just replacing the reservoir fluid and pumping the clutch pedal.

Check this out....

OP, Gen5DIY has a kit for this. http://www.gen5diy.com/moar_powa/clutch

I installed it after having my clutch stick to the floor at the drag strip after a few launches. It's cheap, and if you have some mechnical skills you can do the install. Ever since, no sticking clutch during launches.

I just changed my fluid by using a turkey baste syringe, works fine for me. Using amsoil dot 4 fluid this time, it has a very high boiling point

Is the above linked procedure by texhawk an option if you have not seperated your reservoirs?
