Exhaust systems designed with L99/AFM in mind, and your reviews
I wanted to start a thread that would pop up in search for future folks, and gather some more info in the process.
Only a few companies have made efforts to create an exhaust system specifically for the L99 with Active Fuel Management in mind. This thread is for the crowd of L99 owners who have no interest in getting a tune and turning off AFM - and voiding their warranty. Here is the list of systems I am aware of(linking directly to MFG sites):
T304 and 409 options, round tips or square tips (ground effects)
Only made in T304 (which is good), different systems for ground effects / no ground effects.
Appears to be only made in T409 with T304 tips. Welding-options for ground effects. Personal opinion: leaning towards MBRP. They have the most info out about their exhaust, with a lot of sound clips available. you can get a really good idea of what it will sound like, and you can save money if you want on T409 stainless (I prefer T304). They advertise pretty generous gains. Corsa is pretty modest in their gain claims, and I think it sounds a little raspy. Solo piping being made in T409 is a huge deterrent to me. If you have any of these systems installed, specifically for the L99 (we all know your 6mt system sounds great! ), please provide feedback/reviews and if available, a sound clip from your car. I will contribute the same when I make a decision.I'd also be interested to hear of any other systems made with L99/AFM in mind. |

If your not going to add LTs headers then Corsa is what you want. If you are adding the headers then Magnaflow street is for you. These two differant set ups are great to keep the car nice sounding with no drone and not too loud.

Good idea on this thread. LS3 sound clips can be misleading, I think, for owners shopping for their L99. I'd also like to get something that sounds good but won't REQUIRE a tune to get rid of AFM.
I'm also interested in other L99 exhaust mods that improve the sound with the stock mufflers left on. |

I'm not sure magnaflow's system was made with AFM/6AT's in mind.

I'll be calling magnaflow and JBA tomorrow to inquire on L99 specific systems.

Entaille, here is a link to a thread with some of the best Borla ATAK sound clip videos I've heard yet. Love the sound. Please keep in mind they are for the LS3... I've yet to find any good clips with the Borla ATAK and the L99. Hopefully they'll come out with this thread.

It'll sound like poop when AFM kicks on. borla makes some great sounding exhausts though - I was SOLD on the Borla Street system until I researched the AFM deal.

Don't buy a catback looking for HP/TQ gains....
Buy for your sound preferance and what level of drone you can put up with... or not... |

I am more interested in sound and T304 / quality worksmanship than I am gains. it's hard to ignore when MBRP states their system gains 20+hp/tq and corsa says 6hp/tq - it is a slight consideration for someone who is going to very mildly mod their car.

Appearance is way down on my priority list. Increased Exhaust sound with minimal drone and AFM noise are at the top. I think this is the point of this thread. I thought I read about somone who added headers yet retained the stock exhaust and they had good results without the added annoyances. ANyone know who that was? |

Im planning on LT's(ARH or Dynatech) w/Hi-Flo cats on my L99 w/factory cat back exhaust. Aftermarket cat backs offer almost no HP gains.I contacted several performance shops and was told the factory cat back will flow more than enough for SC'd applications w/no HP loss.Plenty of vids on Youtube of cammed & SC'd cars w/factory cat back exhaust from LMR,Fastlane, etc, etc. and although the mufflers do look a little hideous they sound awsome w/LT's....especially cammed.
Stock cat back = all benefits of performance w/less drone than aftermarket set ups....The LT's & Hi-Flo cats add the power & wake it up! Last edited by FEN; 08-29-2010 at 11:47 PM. |
