The Truth About Ticket Quotas

They do exist. The NYPD has been outed by a recording that became the property of the New York Times.

I am interested to know about the legality of this sort of system.

Discuss.

nothing wrong with quotas....

as long as the tickets aren't being forcefully "created"

i personally see nothing with stating that you have to catch x amount of illigal activity. it's then up to the officer on patrol to locate the activity.

it's a whole different issue if cops are using the quota as an excuse to write up false or questionable tickets...

the other side to the equation is how do they find these people? drive around alot more... and that spends more gas... which may negate the amount of money being pulled in from the tickets themselves.

hopefully it's done right.

Oregon the city I live in near Toledo is know for no quota system, while the rest have them.

And why its so well know is the whole whopla over those redlight and speeding camera systems used by other local cities.

Northwood who has a quota system is boastfuly using that n the camera's to fill the budget gap. Which is killing their local business. So they need more revenue to fill the tax gap. as its circles on down the drain.

That's an insightful way to look at it. If the quotas reflect reality, it might not be so bad. With the population in NYC and the number of bad drivers (also the population of NYC), it is possible that there are plenty of legitimate violations there.

Many Traffic 'Laws' and their interpretation by the legal system seem frivolous, so many tickets are, in effect, being forcefully created.
'Revenuers' really does seem an apt moniker.

Corruption is corruption no matter how you sugar quote it.This is a good example of why America is where it is at.No morality.Lazy work ethics and taking the easy road.If officers were doing their job tickets would be written justly. If citizens obeyed the law there would be less need for enforcement.Hell when I was In high school you would get a ticket for license plate light out, broken windshield, non use of turn signal ,excessive noise, tail light out to name a few.And it was not a warning. Now days maybe 30 % use their turn signals,20% drive around with cracked windshields, and no mufflers a lot.No insurance.Where is the enforcement on these issues. Not much in the areas that I travel in.I say enforce the laws that you have fairly, and perform you duties as you should on a daily basis whatever they may be.

We got some of those recent. like a $7 charge for the judges computer use.
Thats $7 per ticket. millions of buck generated for a $1000 laptop and a few grand in upkeep when he tries to install tetris and crashes it.
Should be 7cents per ticket to really pay for his computer use.
Which has to have one heck of a surplus.

Other one that is asking for trouble is they charge you to get arrested and stay in jail now.

$75 to get arrested and $25 a day to stay in jail.

When you get out, if you don't pay, they arrest you and put you back in jail.

And the billing cycles starts a new.

called the anti homeless/poor charge, gets you wraped up into a never ending cycle that makes it easier to just leave the area.

As long as they aren't trumped up charges, I don't see any issue.

pretty much. you can't get a ticket for doing 100mph in a 55mph zone if you're only driving 54mph.

Beginning of the month and the end of the month is usually when we see a lil more NYPD out.Pop up check points....parking tickets.

City needs to make money some way,if ain't them if you're a homeowner than it's the Sanitation police. :(

Its a damn shame, but I have reached the point, where I just hate to see a police. They are just tax collectors with a fancy uniform on. When my car was stolen they did nothing. When my house was broken into they did nothing. When I was running 70 in Atlanta on 285 they decide that they have to rigidly enforce the law. I wish I had more respect for the police like I did as a kid, but those days are sadly gone. I am not saying this to bash the police officers as people. I think most of them would prefer to be fighting crime. Unfortunately, the politicians are misusing them.

I agree 100% with the bold section. You could also add, "It's not my fault it's his" in there as well. (lack of personal responsibility)

The lack of responsibility may also be why tickets don't get written. people always blame the "cops" for the tickets and not themselves. people try to get out of the tickets instead of just paying them and correcting the behavior/equipment. "cops" have to live near where they work and they may not want to deal with a waiter at a restaurant spitting in their food because some jerk "cop" gave him a ticket for going 40mph over the limit last week.

If people would just admit that they screwed up, and deal with the consequences of their actions, the world would be a better place.

(not to mention parents who think that their children can do no wrong and refuse to discipline their children when it is needed)

And on a side note, the municipalities here make about $5 bucks a ticket on traffic violations. (Cheapest ticket is $127)

So the raise money thing is ridiculous arguement.
