DIY - Meth Injection Install

I just installed the Coolingmist meth injection system. I thought I would share my new knowledge in case anyone is interested in doing a similar install. I did not install the trunk-mounted tank which is the most common route. I wanted everything under the hood. I used the windshield washer tank since I never use it for its intended purpose as a result of never driving in the rain. It holds one gallon. The other option would have been to purchase a one-gallon tank and mount it next to my CAI. I have a Rotofab filter so there is now room to mount a tank next to it on the wheel well. These instructions will work for either tank. I mounted the CMGS gauge in a Fesler pillar pod. Nice fit and looks great. A special thanks to Dave with Coolingmist for being patient with me and answering my endless questions.

Step 1 Fabricate Bracket to Mount Pump: The pump must be lower than the tank. Since the Camaro washer tank sits low I mounted the pump behind the driver’s fog light. This area is fairly protected. I fabricated a bracket to hold the pump and bolt to the front fascia cross brace. I made the bracket out of 1/8” thick 1.5 x 1.5” aluminum angle and an aluminum plate that I welded to the angle. It was necessary to trim some of the angle so it would not hit the front fascia. Be sure the bracket fits before removing the front fascia. This pump location will also work if you install a tank at another location. The pump is slightly higher than the very bottom of the washer tank. There is room at this location with additional fabrication of the bracket to mount the pump even lower, if desired. I felt this location was adequate.

Step 2 Install Bracket and Mount Pump: To mount the pump it is necessary to remove the front fascia. This is not as difficult as it sounds. Follow the directions provided in the link below to remove the fascia.

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...e+front+fascia

This link states that you can access the bolts behind the wheel wells without removing the wheel wells. If this is your first time I recommend removing the wheel wells. It is not that difficult and will make removing the front fascia easier. With the front fascia off the bracket can be installed to the cross member. Hold the bracket in place with a “C” Clamp to check the placement of the pump. Then drill holes through the cross member and bolt the bracket to the cross member. Next drill for the pump mounts and bolt the pump to the bracket. The pump comes with rubber bushings at the bolt locations. These are for the trunk mounted tank. You can remove the rubber or leave them on. I chose to leave them on to minimize potential vibration. It was necessary to use a plat washer over the top of the rubber and double nut the bolt. You can not use the bolts provided with the kit to mount the pump. They are not long enough. You will need to purchase the bolts, washers and nuts to mount the pump.

Step 3 Install Float Switch and Suction Fitting to Washer Tank: Follow the Coolingmist instructions for drilling and installing the float switch and suction fitting in the bottom of whatever tank you use. You will need a 1/8 inch NPT tap (not provided with the kit). WARNING. Before you drill for the float switch be aware that it will not fit down the neck of the washer tank. I had to use a hole saw to get access into the tank. You will then have to patch the tank. I used a mechanical rubber plug because I could not find an easy way to patch the poly tank without taking it off and taking it to a shop that could weld plastic. This option worked fine for me. Be sure to flush all of the cuttings from the tank.

Step 4 Install Check Valve and Flow Sensor: Follow the Coolingmist instructions for assembling the check valve and flow sensor. I mounted them on the bracket near the pump. I suggest locating them where you will be able to get to them in the future for maintenance, if necessary. I mounted the check valve and flow sensor with two rubber cable clamps (not provided).

Step 5 Install Injector: I purchased my CAI from RotoFab. I had them install a bung in the CAI pipe for the injector. If you do not have a fitting you will have to drill and tap your pipe for the injector. Drill for the injector 6 inches or so back from the throttle body. To avoid having something plug the very small opening in the injector nozzle, drill in the side or top of the CAI pipe. Be sure to remove any drill cuttings from the CAI pipe. Screw one end of the injector nozzle into the 90 degree fitting and the other end into the CAI pipe. Place the rubber “O” ring on the nozzle before screwing it into the CAI pipe. Screw a hose quick connect fitting into the other end of the 90.

Step 6 Plumb System: After the injector and 90 degree fitting are installed with the quick connect hose fitting, run the hose making sure to route it so that it will not rub on anything or lay against the radiator. I routed the hose from the injector around the fan outside of the shroud. I used a small plastic cable clamp (not provided) to fasten the hose to the outside of the plastic fan shroud. Once under the car it is easy to route the hose to the flow sensor. I used another cable clamp to secure the hose to the bracket at the flow sensor. Make sure the hose will not rub on anything. You can also use zip ties to secure the hose. Next run hose from the washer tank, or whatever tank you use, to the pump and from the pump to the flow sensor. Use the supplied quick connect fittings on either side of the flow sensor. It is necessary to use the 90 degree quick connect fittings provided in the kit when connecting hose to the pump with this bracket, same as with the trunk mounted tank.

Step 7 Install CMGS Gauge and Run Wire: I probably did this backwards, but before mounting my gauge I soldered all of the wires to gauge. Follow the wiring instructions provided with the kit. Make sure to label the wires because there will be more than one wire of the same color and the wires provided may not match all the colors of the wires on the gauge. After I had all the wires soldered and taped I wrapped them with wire loom (not provided) and attached the rubber boost hose. Then I installed the gauge. I used the Fesler pillar pod to mount my gauge. Follow the installation instructions provided with the pillar pod. Remove the rubber weather strip from the door frame at the pillar. This will provide adequate room to run the wires down the pillar and behind the dash. Next locate the existing hole through the firewall. This is easiest to find from the engine compartment. Find where the red battery cable runs through the firewall. About three inches about the cable is a plastic hole plug. Push the plug out with your finger. Stick a pencil through the hole. Then look on the inside of the firewall above the driver’s foot rest to find where the pencil is located behind the insulation. After you find the hole, run the wires and boost hose through the firewall. In the engine compartment run the wires by following the washer hose from the firewall to the washer tank. The wire the float switch, flow sensor and pump according to the instructions. I grounded the wiring to the frame near the bracket. I used the power wire to my supercharger pump to power the system. I have a Harrop supercharger. On the driver’s side of the supercharger near the firewall there is a 1/8” plug. I used a barbed fitting to attach the boost hose.

I made the edit. I am glad to hear I will not have to remove the flow sensor every year before it goes into storage for the winter.

Do you have details/pictures of where you got your switched ignition power source and where you got your boost line?

I got my switched power from the wire going to my recirculation pump for my supercharger. This will probably not help many people. It was close to my meth pump location. I found a spare 15 amp circuit, but in the box it is not switched. I am not sure if this could be used or not.

I have a Harrop supercharger. Not many people have this type, so what I did probably won't be very helpful, but I found a threaded plug on the driver's side of the supercharger all the way back near the firewall. It was 1/8" inch. I took out the plug and installed a barbed fitting to attach the boost line.
