If we get rid of all those messy coal plants and replace them with 2,500 square miles of solar panels and wind turbines, we should just about be able to achieve this dream! It should only cost 500 trillion dollars.

I mean really? Are you that worried about a bunch of tree hugging hippies who are dumb enough to think Honda Civics cause an increase in average temp around the entire world?

They are stupid and 60MPG will never pass.

I'll keep gunning my 14MPG GT500 past those hippy bastards. They can eat my dust.

No way in hell I'd ever change my lifestyle, over pay for a car and drive a 75HP POS just to save a little oil. Suck on my left nut.

The problem is the myth that America is addicted to oil for their gas guzzling cars.

No its business. Over 75% of all oil is use to make diesel for transportation.

Any changes made to the regular folks passenger cars is null and voided 3 times over.

That is the other problem I have. So much diesel is eatin up by transpo it has to dwarf Joe Blow's use of regular gas.

You can't change the trucking industry... it has to be the way it is until there is some monumental break through. Goods have to get where they are going and trucks are the most versatile way.

Ya know, instead of just simply making up statistics off the cuff, maybe we can try a research tool or two.

I'm not a global warming alarmist, I just don't think you'll get any traction in your arguments if you don't have good facts. And it's pretty clear the US does have a pretty hearty appetite for oil.

My basic assumption is: If the alarmists are right about GW, and the alarmists are right about peak oil then the natural conclusion is the problem will fix itself since we'll have no choice but alternate fuels when the oil runs out. So the GW people should be hoping we drive the biggest lowest MPG vehicles to just get that pesky oil gone so we can move on. It drives me NUTS when the global warming crowd talks about conservation using peak oil as a motivator.

*edit* sorry a_Username .

Make you wonder if people even do a simple Google search before throwing out some homemade statistics. Gasoline production is nearly double that of Distillate Fuel Oil.

Your chart shows what is MADE from a barrel of oil, but not who uses it or how...FYI, for the US, the biggest consumer of oil is the Department of Defense

Nicely done sir! Anyway, yeah I seriously doubt a 60 mpg bill will get passed, there's no feasible way for the auto industry to hit that market without spending entirely too much money and sacrificing sales.

*edit* Found some charts on a Google search that do support what the other guy was saying

http://lugar.senate.gov/energy/graphs/sector.html

http://www.freedomprize.org/prizes/solution.php

No telling how accurate any of these numbers are of course....

If we grade all the roads to slope down hill.......they just might reach the 60mpg!
